Fort Funston Coastal Trail is a 2 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Daly City, California that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Located in the southwest corner of San Francisco, Fort Funston was a harbor defense installation built to defend against naval attacks. Nowadays, visitors can check out the remnants of this fort which include heavy weaponry, Nike missiles, and Battery Davis's 16 inch guns. Fort Funston was also built on high sandy bluffs where the wind is quite strong. Make sure to hold onto your belongings as they may get blown away! Looking for more to do? Check out the variety of trails Fort Funston has to offer! Trails can be used for hiking, running, and horseback riding. Trails are also dog friendly and they can be off leash here. For avid bird watchers, head on over to the coastal nesting sites for bank swallows, as a state threatened species, visitors can only see them in two places one being Fort Funston. Note: Bank swallows raise their young in between March and June then they migrate during July and August. Additionally, hang-gliding is very popular at Fort Funston. The best time for hang gliding is during March and October. Fort Funston is also a Hang-III (intermediate site) with a launch area. Accessibility: Part of this trail is paved and considered wheelchair and stroller friendly. Just that section, the Sunset Trail, can be viewed on its own trail page here: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/fort-funston-sunset-trail-accessible

Park in the lot off of Skyline Boulevard.
Easily accessible by car or public transportation. Expect about an hour commute from San Francisco on public transit- though the 18 line drops you off right at the entrance of the trail.
It was beautiful and watching the hang gliders was fun. The number of off leash dogs that weren't being paid attention to by their owners wasn't ok. There are some areas blocked off to keep people out in order to preserve the wildlife, but that doesn't keep the off leash dogs out and many of their humans aren't helping to keep them out either.
Good. Parts sand, parts concrete, some mud, some water pooling after rain. Hella off leash dogs.
Lovely walk along the coast! There are lots of dogs out on this trail. I’d recommend parking in the lot just south of where it says here on the app. Great views of the ocean! Partly paved path, part gravel, part sand.
Great place for a coastal hike. Definitely for beginners. Fort Funston is full of sandy trails that intertwine with one another, and is a GREAT place to take your kids or dogs. If you have a dog(s) or kid(s), this is a fun, quiet place to go for sandy picnics.
Great place for outdoor, walking with dogs, beach fun and relaxing in overall
