This hike is on a dirt road, rather than a traditional "trail". The Serrano Indians revered a megalith of brilliant white quartz called “God’s Eye” as the eye of their creator, “Kruktat.” In the 1850s the Serrano were brutally chased out of their Big Bear Valley homelands by ranchers angry at attacks. This left God’s Eye exposed, and when the California Gold Rush brought miners, they dynamited the sacred site in a fruitless search for gold. The Eye of God once projected possibly dozens of feet from a hillside above Baldwin Lake near Big Bear. In a crowning blow, a desperate and deluded gringo gold miner endeavored to detonate the Eye of God in search of precious minerals, exploding the mountain of quartz into a small rock face that it is today. The Eye of God, still an impressive site, is located near the 156-acre Baldwin Lake Ecological Preserve, that includes a unique pebble plain plant community, as well as a vernal wet meadow habitat, significant as a wintering site for bald eagles.

Definitely read the story behind the site before you go. It’s an easy hike, but very exposed- heats up fast in the summer. Good for dogs.

The actual rock face area is fenced off and I didn’t get out to go looking for it but used this trailhead as entrance to the pioneer trail.

Accidentally took this. Thinking it was s different way back from crystal mountain. Not too crazy about fire road hikes...but nice views at the top.

Hiked hear today. For some reason the Crystal Mountain via PCT brigs you to Crystal Mountain then past it to hear. Neat sight to see, but nothing special.

Simple hike on a dirt road with little of interest until the end. But, the payoff is pretty cool. Great view in all directions.

A dirt road not a hiking trail. A bit steep but nothing difficult or technical. The top does reward with a nice view.

We drove most of this hike since it was on a dirt road. I was a little disappointed only because I hoped for more of a path through trees like the other hikes we have done. We walked the last little bit that we couldn't do by car. The end result is a beautiful view atop a white rock formation.

If you're looking for a hike surrounded by beauty and historical significance, then God's Eye is for you! It gets a moderate amount of traffic and isn't too difficult of a hike, though some might consider it to be of moderate difficulty.
