We were under the impression you needed a high clearance vehicle to reach the trail head and Eureka lake. We started in the parking lot. Great hike. Awesome views of Mt. Lassen and the Sierra Buttes. Here is the link to our video of Eureka peak https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYvtOBPZp30

We really enjoyed this hike with our three children (ages 11, 9 & 9). It was moderate, but challenging for the family. The prize at the top is worth it. Agree with another reviewer that the loop is not well marked at the top so it was an out and back for us, too.

This hike is beautiful, with stunning views at the top. It's not well marked, but the peak as the destination makes it fairly intuitive. The "loop" part was unclear, so it became an out and back for me, which was still great. I would rate this moderate to difficult as far as incline.

This is a great hike particularly if part of the group just wants to hang out at Eureka Lake while others hike. The road to the trailhead has improved drastically, making it more appealing as a hiking option.
