Wildflowers and streams are spring attractions on these trails. However, expansive views of the Sacramento Valley are perennial attractions. As means to maintain an easy grade, the Escalator winds so tight that you might be able to see behind you as easily as ahead of you! The mix of vegetation portrays the nearly constant changes of aspect, elevation, soil and moisture. Take a break at Mule Mountain Pass and decide what route to next pursue: Mule Mountain Trail, Salt Creek/Buckhollow Trails (into Whiskeytown National Recreation Area) or return on the Escalator.

The map directions via Apple map had us starting at Wintu trail. From there we hiked to Meiners Loop then went on the Escalator trail and ended up where you could choose to continue to Whiskytown, head up to the summit, take the Terminator trail, Mt Mule trail, or return via Escalator trail. This was our 2nd hike ever and were glad we challenged ourselves. We ended up going 10.08 miles round trip today. We didn’t get in any hurry and met a few other hikers and some on mountain bikes.

The beginning is some pretty hard uphill, I walked most of it but when you get passed the bench, the downhill is fantastic, I seriously recommend it to all local mountain bikers
