This trail is good for running but can be crowded. This route is the Lower San Merrill trail towards Lake. At the beginning, take the second trail further back towards mountain. At the top, turn right for Echo Mtn. Alternatively, turn left for Sierra Saddle (turn left again once you hit the paved road and the sign for Sierra Saddle should be on the right; you can take the paved road back up to backtrack to Echo Mtn after you reach the tables—adds on 4 miles).

Good for a good workout, a couple decent views of Pomona. Not too exciting

Honestly a great hike. I would say by mid day it was pretty hot (when we reached the bottom again). Amazing views. Pretty crowded on the weekend until after Echo Mountain. Some rocky sections which made it a bit slippery on the decent.

Nice early trail, we started before sunrise, and are glad we did. Nice morning views about halfway up. By 7am as we started to head down, trail was already busy. About 80% wearing mask. Very narrow trail so if you are very concerned about physical distancing it’s hard. Cool remnants of old resort at the top.

The hike is worth it for the ruins at the top, but the ascent itself is fairly drab. I'd give it a higher rating but with COVID-19 going on I'm keeping it at three stars because of the 30 or so people I passed on the trail, only 80% or so had masks at all, and of those that did most were not wearing them when passing for some reason. I would avoid this trail until this pandemic winds down some.

Started at 6am and only saw 3 people in the way up. Overcast the entire way. Even a little bit of rain near the top. Great workout!

Decided to take a hike with husband today and it was a pretty good workout. Very sunny...no shade but nice view once you get to the top. We got there around 1pm and it was a little crowded. Also got to see many lizards and one snake.

Great trail, can get a little crowded but it’s ok. It’s worth it once you get to the top, nice picnic area to sit, eat a sandwich, and rest to go back down or continue up to Inspiration Point.

This trail was really crowded, so lots of stopping to pass. With minimal shade, it's pretty brutal in the heat with lots of bugs. Definitely more of a city hike for a workout than a trail for solitude/scenery.

Great trail! More people than expected but still very enjoyable. It was great to get out of the apartment and be in the sun.

Great workout, amazing views from Echo Mountain Peak! There are old train remnants & an overgrown foundation of a hotel/ leisure complex from the 1920’s. The trail is narrow. Hiking before sunset, the mountains creates shade - otherwise a very sunny trail. Picnic possibilities on the top and a few benches along the route.

Great workout, the view at the top is worth it. Would say this is somewhere between moderate and hard. Lots of switchbacks the whole way up, get your heart rate going but there are picnic tables and old train remains at the top. Go early because the sun gets toasty.

Did this the day the trails opened back up in LA. Great trail to do in morning, evening, or a cloudy day. Bring water, sunscreen and a good hat to protect from the sun. Awesome views/forest area at the top.

Terrific experience after trails being closed for a while. Opened up today with some common sense rules that of course not everyone followed simple as taking a mask with you. Oh well I had a blast. FYI. There’s some human stool at some point. Be careful.
