Good but busy trail. After 3-4 miles (past Upper Echo Lake) it gets steep & rocky for about 2 miles. Some mosquitoes on the trail, more near the lake. I found a parking spot at the trailhead on Thursday but it was completely full Saturday, and all the road shoulder parking was full too. Handy store at Echo Lake Chalet. A permit from the Forest Service is required or overnight stays, only available at Forest Service office in South Lake Tahoe or in Camino. Day use permit is voluntary and available at trailhead. Temperatures in the mid 70’s, cloudy but didn’t rain.

Actually began this hike at the Horsetail Falls trailhead and ended at the Echo Lake Chalet. Lake of the Woods was my favorite part of the hike. I found several good camp spots that surround it. Only place I got off track was the approach to Lake of the Woods from Ropi Lake; trail was difficult locate.

Arrived to Echo Lakes Trailhead (Echo Chalet) mid morning - parking lot was full and road side parking was filled ~1 mile from trailhead so we had to hike in from the road. Strava clocked us at 8 miles from car to Ropi campsite. Elevation from trailhead to Ropi clocked in at 1300 ft of up. Hike was 2.5 hours including a few breaks for snacks/ checking out Lake of the Woods, etc. There is a great hike up to Pyramid Lake if you're looking to do a little bit more/ explore. Only 1-2 other groups around the lake even though the rest of Desolation was packed (long weekend) - felt like we had the place all to ourselves!

Spent 3 nights at Ropi, great camp sites and had the place to myself for two days - then the weekend crowds came !. Is easy to loose the trail hiking back out from Ropi so watch out the stone markings as the trail disappears at a few spots. Well worth the hike in but try to go mid week to avoid the crowds

We spent the night at Ropi and it was definitely worth the hike in. Beautiful lake with lots of trout. I recommend downloading a topo map before because we lost the trail a few times.

Wonderful weekend hiking from Echo Lake Chalet to Ropi Lake. This is a very rocky hike for the first few miles, be sure to have good boots on & make sure your pup is ready! Once you arrive at Lake of the Woods, continue past and wrap around Pyramid Peak to Ropi Lake. Here you will find some beautiful rapids and lots of granite with little shade cover. We found a great spot near the rapids and had a wonderful night of sleep. We made much better time on the hike back.
