NOTE: It has been reported this trail has temporary closures due to COVID-19. Please see the park's website for up to date information. Eaton Canyon Trail is a relatively easy hike to a 40-foot waterfall with views of the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Monica Mountains. Its proximity to Pasadena, Altadena, and Santa Monica make this a very popular trail for casual hikers in Los Angeles. The trailhead can get very crowded on the weekends and those hot California summer days - but it's worth a visit even if you have to fight through crowds - especially when spring wildflowers carpet the lower portions of the canyon floor of the Eaton Canyon natural area. There is also an excellent nature center at Eaton Canyon Park near the trailhead, with great exhibits and many free presentations for those who are interested. This family-friendly Southern California trail will be easy for most, although it gets more rugged the closer you get to the beautiful waterfall. The trail only has a few hundred feet of elevation gain, but there are several stream crossings and areas of boulder-hopping and rock climbing on the way to Eaton Canyon Falls. Nevertheless, this trail is manageable for most people.

Overall the trail is located in a very convenient location. However due to that large crowds are often formed. But the hike itself is very easy and beautiful.

Great, easy hike! I personally like to go through the left side, aka the rocky, sunny side, rather than the “main” path. Been there plenty of times. A quick, go-to hike especially in the morning.

Wayyy too crowded!

The trail was crowded. People were intermittently playing music. There was graffiti on some of the rock structures. Those were the negatives. On the positive side, the weather was beautiful and the waterfall at the end has a small climb that allows one to be photographed sans crowd. My 6 year old daughter and I enjoyed it thoroughly, but probably would not return.

Have you been too Walmart on Black Friday? Now image that x 1000! Definitely an easy trail not much of a workout and it’s really sad how much trash is left behind.

Good trail but far too crowded. People walk dogs and leave dog shit everywhere. Those that do pick it up end up tossing it out bag and all on the side of the trail. Waterfall is a good sight but not worth all the people traffic. Will definitely come back when the crowds lighten up.

This trail is completely crowded. If you want to avoid the large crowds I suggest going very early! Got stuck numerous times behind slow moving families. Friendly reminder, throw your trash in a trash can - don’t leave it in nature.

So packed but a nice recovery walk.

Always loved this trail. I’ve been coming here for years. I like that there are hills, flat land, shade, open areas, boulders and of course the waterfall at the end. The best time to see the waterfall would be after a good rain at least 1 week before you go but either way it’s a great family hike. Side note: Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and with recent trails closed this one has gotten kind of crowded even at 6-7am.

First time visiting, it had potential to be a wonderful hike. I’ll visit on another day. Today was crowded and many were blaring music. The fall itself wasn’t worth it.

Love the trail, people not wearing their masks, and not doing social distancing. But overall I love this trail. Had a lot of fun.

Great trail, too many people making noise. People playing their stupid music, large families with yelling children. Good exercise, not very serene right now.

I used to love this trail but right now it’s a complete nightmare. You cant walk with out bumping into someone, there’s trash everywhere. Everyone stays blasting their music on speakers (wear your earphones!) I came on a Thursday around 10AM Parking is full but they have overflow parking so that was good.

Amazing hike

Be warned: very crowded and MANY people show complete lack of social distancing or mask wearing. And this is on a weekday. After uncomfortably getting through the first mile or so of this, I opted to take the turn off (away from falls) to do the upper loop where I only encountered 4 people over the course of 3 miles, abundant wildflowers, and great views. Was up for the workout though, and sturdy shoes or boots recommended for the narrow, rocky downhill.
