Description
Waypoints (0)

This is a good way to see Eagle Rock without backtracking. Start off at Marvin Braude and go Left onto Mulholland. Take this to Bent Arrow which is a great hike path etched into the side of the mountain. Bent Arrow brings you to Temescal Canyon Road. Take this to the three way fork and take the trail most to the right all the way to Eagle Rock. Instead of heading back the way you came, follow the path the Eagle Springs Fire Road back to Temescal Canyon Road, going the low road to the left and back home.

Heavily trafficked by bikers and (my personal pet peeve) hikers playing music. Unless you're a serious athlete this is moderate, not easy. Yes, it's a wide fire road without technical bits or scrambles. But if you tackle the full loop to Eagle Rock you will indeed cover about 1700 feet of elevation gain. Suggest confirming your location on the map frequently. I missed two turns (no signage for Bent Arrow, and the only sign for Eagle Rock is once you're already there), adding an unintentional 3.5mi to an already long trip.

Easy hike. Views are pretty. No clouds and minimal shade. Great to be outdoors and get away from buildings/city. This is not difficult nor moderate. I’m very active so perhaps that is why. If you have two legs and not terribly outta shape or obese, you should be fine. Great hike for soccer moms or casual walkers. If you want a challenge, this isn’t it. If you run, it’ll get your HR up but not at all for hiking. Had a lot of fun. Easy to chit chat while being on a nature stroll.

Hiking

Hike this 11/14/20 as it was getting cold and snowy in the higher mountains. This hikes starts off Reseda Blvd in a very large and accessible parking lot. Note that you have to pay for parking the closer you get to the trailhead but it’s free a bit down. I started around 9am and the weather was gorgeous. Most of this trail is a fire road with little shade so recommend sunscreen. After 3/4 of a mile I made a right onto the Temescal canyon trail. For half a mile you wrap around topanga park with gorgeous views of the park below and around you. Continue straight for another mile and a half till you reach a rest spot that splits the trail into multiple routes. I took a sharp right which begins the trek to eagle rock. After another mile, you’ll notice a turn off on the left to go to eagle rock. I’m not sure if I would call it a scramble but it can be slightly sketchy to reach eagle rock. The views are breathtaking and you can see Malibu beach and the ocean in the distance. After a few pics, I looped back to the resting spot before doubling back to the parking lot. Finished a little after noon and drank a liter of water. Seemed like a nice trail to create so hopefully it’s enjoyed as well.

Awesome hike! Very cool scrambling on Eagle Rock. Great easy workout, done in 3 hours! Got a video of my first encounter with a rattlesnake blocking the width of the trail (1 mile in). I’m glad he decided to let me pass.

Such a cool hike and great work out. Throughout the trail you notice changes in the geology of the dirt/ rocks. Turns red, almost Martian like at one point.

Lovely trail! Terrain is rough in a few parts, and there isn’t a ton of shade, but it’s doable if you do it early on!

Really good long, easy hike. We attempted this trail, but missed the Garapito trail after we stopped for lunch at Eagle Rock. We ended up walking 8.2 miles. We’re going back for another attempt. Parking is available. Very top, after a yellow line is pay $5 (cash) to iron ranger. Otherwise park for free in designated spots just before the top of Reseda. Clean bathroom/ outhouses!
