Purple Lake to Duck Lake is a moderate hike along the JMT. It starts out uphill and exposed for about a mile, then turns right and becomes a bit more shaded. The turnoff to Duck Lake is lovely. There are very few sites at Duck Lake which are located near the outlet on a small knoll. Pika Lake is next to Duck Lake. There are more sites there that would provide more privacy as Duck Lake is thick with Mammoth day-hikers. Going down Duck Pass is no joke! So be aware if you decide to hike out of Lake Mary up this beast. It is exposed and dusty. The lakes along the route to Lake Mary are all very nice and provided enough streams for water replenishment along the way. Gotta stay the well hydrated out there!
