The trail was not overgrown and actually was fine for a good walk. Though this hike was not one of my favorites and I won’t come here again. I did not find it to be even a little remotely exciting and it did not have much in good views. It was hot in the open fields and there was little shade anywhere. It was basically miles of cow fields to get to the ocean and there still wasn’t anything to see. The marsh was appealing if your there to bird watch otherwise, not many wildflowers or much wildlife. I seen one deer and a lot of cows. The best part was the parking lot which had a outhouse and it was adequate enough for use, though no running water. I am really not sure why this trail gets so many stars.

Went last weekend, not closed. Saw lots of leopard sharks and a few bat rays at the end on Drakes Head. Slightly overgrown, recommend pants and check for ticks afterwards

This is an awesome trail! Good workout but not too steep up and down. Lots of good wildlife around. Beautiful halfway turn around point on the coast. Definitely recommend!

I only gave this a 3/5 because it's less of a trail and more of a stroll through some cow pastures with barb wire fence next to you for the majority of it. I didn't rate it any lower because the view at Drake's head was cool and we got to see a bunch of wild life on the trail. Not a lot of traffic on this trail either. A few bikers here and there but we were pretty much by ourselves the whole time. The best part was the gang of quails we saw. There were a ton of em scootin around chirping with their little head feathers bobbin around, it was adorable. There's also a lot of cows just free roaming in the pastures you're walking through. You could definitely pet a cow if you're brave enough. Once you get to the cliff there's a grassy area where you can lay a blanket down and have a nice lunch or nap. You could possibly get down to the beach area but there's no obvious trail that I saw. Kind of disappointing since it was such a nice looking beach with no one on it.

This is a gorgeous hike out to the shore line. A little bit of topography to traverse but nothing too intense. Gorgeous views throughout the whole trail. Gets pretty windy as you get closer to the shore. Bring an extra layer on a cool or foggy day.

Nice and easy mostly flat hike with wonderful views of the Estero de Limantour and Drakes bay. At the end your treated with cliff top view of Drakes Bay and Limantour Spit. Looking down into the water you can see Rays, Sharks and seals swimming. Don't follow the app map and try to take middle and left trails towards the end of trail as they are overgrown, not maintained and hard to to find. Definitely not worth the hassle unless wearing pants and gaiters.

Pros: spectacular view at Drake’s head; lots of interesting birds; good exercise no big steeps Cons: >50% trail is cow pasture- the cows don’t bother me (although they are frightening to a child), but the hoof prints dig up the trail pretty bad; on a windy day this trail was exposed and very windy

I love this hike! Amazing views at the end. Shared the trail with cows. A gentle trail through pastures.

This is a good hike. I wasn't prepared to share the trail with bikes. Lots of bikes. And much of the trail is over pasture with cattle grazing, so lots of cow patties and, you know, the aroma. The Sunset Beach Trail is my favorite option of the two, having done both.

What a surprise this was! Great hike through rolling hills with lots of cows happily grazing. A nice little forested area at one point in the trail. Then at the trailhead, a really breathtaking view! The view overlooks the Limantour Spit and the water sheltered in between is home to many rays and sharks. We watched them from our perch atop Drake’s Head for a while before hiking back. It was like we had hiked to the aquarium! Very cool hike.

A great nature walk with a beautiful finish. Can easily be done in a few hours, but stop, rest, and enjoy the view for awhile at Drakes Head. Tips: * The majority of the trail is exposed to the sun, so be sure to wear sunscreen. * Bring water and snacks (duh) * Be sure to wear layers, so that you can undress/dress accordingly as you get closer to the cool air of the ocean.
