off road driving
Perhaps the most popular route in the Calico Mountains. Famous for an extreme obstacle that we describe going downhill on the return part of loop. You can bypass this obstacle coming downhill, but not going up. Visit unique Bismarck Mine. Great views at the top. Believe it or not, the route going up was once a paved road called "Doran Scenic Drive." You'll see chunks of old pavement that have added to the difficulty. Surrounding area is popular with unlicensed vehicles. Many fun side roads to explore. Officially the canyon on the right is called Odessa Canyon; the canyon on the left is called Bismarck Canyon. While in the area, make sure you visit Calico Ghost Town (fee area). Difficult. Very narrow in spots with large boulders and embedded rock. Not for oversized vehicles or stock SUVs. Differential lockers, skid plates and high ground clearance required. Few people can drive up the canyon on the left (Bismarck Canyon), but many try.
