great wildlife, little shade and some nice - but not extraordinary - views. Still, a nice hike to feel refreshed and energized. I did this hike late morning and it was hot. If hear bothers you, go much earlier.

It is a nice trail for a quick 2-3 hours hike. Nice scenery. I guess it would be really nice in spring time. Worth coming back that time.

ok we did this midday in July probably not optimal timing but still a good hike. winter & spring depending on rains will be terrific. pretty easy to follow with a number of options. beautiful rock formations. not too many people - and a public pool if you are so inspired after your hike. *people please bring water for your dogs!* i helped out a couple folks whose dogs were obviously distressed. no matter the weather just bring it. your dog will thank you

Disappointing. While there are some pretty stretches (Little Yosemite, Pine Canyon), much of the hike is along or adjacent to paved roads.

a few big uphill parts at the end that we weren’t expecting but made it through.

Good, relatively short walk. Plentiful free parking. Good elevation, creates some good views. Would be good for a jog as well.

Agree with other recent reviews. Nice views, flowers .Several streams to cross. You might get wet feet.

We completed the loop clockwise by starting on the left. If you take the trail counter clockwise you’ll have a long steep incline to start. This trail is really nice in Spring with green meadows and wildflowers. We liked having the stream on the first part of the trail. It was easy to cross.

This was a beautiful hike through lushly green hills with gorgeous views! I took the Fairy Ridge option to the top and was rewarded with exceptional views. also took the Stage road portion and saw the nesting area for Peregrine Falcons (you could see several flying above) and crossed over about four beautiful streams. April is an amazing time to hike here.

We saw deer, turkey, and a coyote within 1 mile of starting the hike. Beautiful views with lots of hills.

Really amazing hike. If starting at the gravel lot, go left first as you get the big inclines out of the way first. Dogs are able to go off leash for 95% of this hike unless you choose to do the big loop which takes you into Mt Diablo St Park. Better to go down the Ravine trail and loop back if you have a dog. Otherwise we loved it - beautiful scenery, green hills, inclines and declines, a stream, wildlife.

A technical trail that today included water crossings, steep ascents and descents, paths well traveled by cows. But bird sightings included the peregrine falcons and western bluebirds. Lovely day, nice people.

I love this trail. It’s a nice shady trail. As another post says the trail can easily be extended. We did witness lots of wild life even late afternoon. Only minor issue was that it’s a horse trail so watch where you step as you go on the trail.

Beautiful loop through a fairly diverse landscape, along rock formations, creeks, meadows, cow pasture, forest. Easy to extend the hike if you're motivated, we made it an 8 mile loop.

I live 3 miles from this trailhead. Great short 3 mike hike. If you go early Morning like I get to do it’s great, very little people. Falcons nest. Red tail hawk nest. Stellar’s Jays, Quail, Turkeys, lots of birds. The Ranger is a super nice guy.We have even seen a Bobcat. Just don’t go in the afternoon with the crowds of loud groups of people. My go to short hike.

Lot of parking options, go down near the stables (not the school) for your best options. The start of the hike is pretty average - not much to look at other than Castle rock. Crossed a few very small streams but easy to navigate without getting wet. The back half of the hike is pretty amazing - green wide open space and some interesting rock formations. Few more Mountain bikers & cows on this section but still peaceful

falcons soaring over head. The beauty of Mt Diablo and the rolling hills set as the back drop of several trail choices. Many fun and low difficulty rating trails.

Followed exact course and GPS said 1,300 ft elev. Also 6 miles. It was beautiful!! Mostly runnable hills except for a few sections. Deer, rabbits, vultures. Some sections torn up by rain and then livestock. Made it more technical than it used to be. If running, highly recommend trail shoes.

Lovely hike through Caste Rock today. It's been breezy and temperatures in the high 60s, low 70s. I saw a family of quail, with lots of little ones still, and a family of turkeys with about 6 youngsters. Water running in the creek still and wildflowers still out but reaching the end.

Hard, not moderate. The last part has an extremely sharp downgrade.
