It gets vertical real quick and there’s no shade. The top is nice around the reservoir. There are a couple picnic tables with shade there and a water fountain.

Trail is open for hiking, from the road up to the top. Steep. Gravel. Well maintained. Beautiful vistas. Once at the top, you cannot continue because Elfin Forest is closed due to COVID cocerns.

Good trail but not as exciting as I had hoped...steep first bit!

A lovely hike! About 1.5 miles gravel road before you reach the Elfin forest, lake and dam area. The first loop in that section is the best part by far! Natural, narrow trail with very few people and gorgeous views. Definitely moderate, there’s a little up and down, but the majority of the elevation is on the 1.5 mile hike up and down. This isn’t the most isolated, natural trail you’ll find, but it isn’t bad considering the area. There’s also a portapotty along the way.

This was a tough hike for me. The first mile and a half was straight uphill a steep gravel trail. There was a bit of shade on the sides of the trail but you eventually find yourself without much. The views of the dam are spectacular. It was a clear day today and the water was so blue. At the end of this hike there is a nice resting spot with some covered benches and views of both lake Hodges and the dam. I was pretty pooped by the end but it was a beautiful day for it.

I got chased off the top of the mountain by a giant Crow. Must have been mating and had a nest cause 1 became 3 which then became 15, and they were mating... so I was really confused as it looked like they were fighting themselves while occasionally swooping down at me from 10 feet up of the mthn side. Awesome hike though. Basically a mile straight up.

Dog friendly, good leg workout, and steep hills. Overall awesome hike with a fantastic view of the lakes once you get to the top!

Beautiful and elvish. Includes almost all trails in Elfin Forest Reserve.

This is a great hike with an amazing view at the top. On the way up look behind you for a beautiful view of the valley. Warm up and stretch before starting as you go straight up.

Definitely should do this early in the morning. I went at about 10:30am and it’s really hot. Not Lux shade and very little sign direction for trail paths.id do it again, but much better prepared the next time.

Very nice workout and steep at beginning, then great views and several trails, can see lake Hodges, the revisor and beach in distance. Nice to do after work, we started at 515 and got out by 715. Careful, gate will be closed at 7pm so park across street

I LOVE this trail! Very steep, very quick gains in elevation; watch out coming down if you aren't wearing properly fitting shoes, otherwise your toes will be toast. Absolutely gorgeous views and a great workout. Lots of connecting trails after crossing into the Olivenhain Reserve shortly after coming up on the dam.

Exceptional challenge that should be started early in the day. The first couple miles are a real quad burner and a great feat to conquer. The loop markings are a little confusing while running but no matter what you will get great views and work out.

Great day to do the trail, cloudy and some light rain ! Bring your poles for the way back

First mile is a steep climb. Soon after reaching the top, you will enter the Elfin Preserve. There are many loop trails to explore and beautiful views of the reservoir.
