Getting There

Crissy Field is a stunning park site within the Golden Gate National Parks. Crissy Field's 100 acres of wild, windswept shoreline are a favorite place for walkers, joggers, boardsailors, bicyclists, thousands of birds and the occasional seal. Originally a rich salt marsh and gathering ground for native people, Crissy Field was later the landing site of Spanish explorers and traders from Russia, England, and Boston. In 1915, the Panama Pacific International Exposition was held here, and shortly after the area became one of the country's foremost military airfields and part of a U.S. army post. With generous community support, Crissy Field has been transformed into a spectacular national parkland. The 100-acre site is included within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Presidio of San Francisco. Along with the entire Presidio, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. As part of the site restoration effort in 1998-2000, individuals and groups from schools, corporations, and civic organizations put in more than 100,000 native plants to help restore natural systems at Crissy Field. Community volunteers continue to play an important role in sustaining long-term stewardship of this national parkland. The Palace of Fine Arts was originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art and is a beautiful area to explore. With its towering columns and domed rotunda, the building resembles those of Ancient Rome. This is a paved trail with magnificent views of the SF Bay and Golden Gate Bridge while walking west and city scape views on the return. This is one of the most beautiful walks in SF.

Early on Saturday morning parking was easy and the scenery was awesome. Did the Crissey Field Parkrun which happens every Saturday. Got much busier in the two hours I was there and the fog cleared.

Great flat trail, easy walk, beautiful views. We decided to start out at Palace of Fine Arts. As we followed the trail we saw signs to go to the Presidio then across the Golden Gate Bridge, which we did instead of looping right back. Ended up at the border or Marin County, which felt like an achievement, then headed back to Palace of Fine Arts. This was a doable, stress-free round trip of seven miles with small breaks when needed.

Great views the whole way and super easy walk.... the further away you walk from the GGB towards the Marina the better views and pics you get with the whole Bridge profile coming into view.

Nice open space on the edge of the city. While walking this trial came across Palace of Fine Arts which ended up being a stand out of my trip to San Francisco. Was a hidden oasis in the city after being amongst the towers in downtown for a week!

An easy flat urban walk along the beach from the SF bridge to the marina. Views of all sorts of activities going on on the water and the beach.

Loved this trail and added a trip across the bridge and back! Wind much better on the return. Be careful of the tourist that don’t realize they are walking in the bike path. Ps easy ride with a little hill on the way up to the bridge

Probably the best view of the entire Golden Gate Bridge. Also fabulous views of Alcatraz and Angel Island. It is generally packed with tourists but there's enough space for everyone. There's also a restaurant, warming huts, fishing piers and Fort Point close by.

Bird Watching

Great birding! The lagoon offers great views of ducks and sandpipers. The beach has a protected area for endangered Snowy Plovers that you can watch. Lots of loons and grebes in the bay as well. Downside is the wind that can pick up pretty quickly and all the tourists, but during the week it's pretty mellow.
