Did this as a point-to-point hike from Redbox to Colby Canyon with car shuttle. It snowed 4 days ago and there was still quite a bit of snow on the north side of the mountain. It was up to 1 foot deep but getting packed in the trail. A bit icy. Microspikes were helpful. Also quite a few downed trees to duck under or climb over. Gorgeous trail especially in the snow.
Beautiful trail hike starting through the canyon, crossing waters few times and up to the meadows. I hiked on 12/29 right after big night of snow so it was a bit icy and slippery in the canyon area. Definitely recommend to families with kids and dogs friendly. Great starter if you desire hike up either to Strawberry peak or Josephine’s peak !
There is no “river” here, but rather a stream canyon on the lower part of the trail that is only a trickle at this time of year. I continued beyond the meadow area to the Strawberry Peak Trail junction, and the trail is all well maintained. After the first mile, I didn’t meet anyone on the trail all afternoon on a Tuesday. I didn’t see anything moist when passing through the meadow area, but that is reportedly off trail. The trail in the vicinity of the meadow has plenty of views of the dramatic north face of Strawberry Peak.
Canyon was a little rocky so definitely watch the footing. Great ascent up over the saddle with a series of switchbacks. Its pretty exposed on the way over the saddle, but once you get over it levels out for some good views
Over 3,000 feet elevation. Tough the first few miles then gorgeous mountain forest views.
Mountaineer route too risky. We aborted and went other way and did total 10 mile out and back.
