Hiking

8.9 miles, 1673' gain, 3:06 moving. Quiet on a Sunday afternoon, just some paragliders and us. Good elevation gain with views of the IE, SB and SG ranges. Manzanita and catclaw acacia are prevalent above 2200', look for groves of them that hide deer during the day as you approach the staging ground.

Good easy drive with 4x4. Some overgrown bushes so have to be careful if u don’t want to scrape your Jeep.

Scenic drivingGreat!No shadeOff trail

I loved it. Took my gladiator so it wasn’t hard on this car but I’m sure it would be difficult on a Honda Civic :) Really nice roads for OHV. They ask not to drive quads or dirt bikes but street legal vehicles only.

This was pretty easy drive for any truck or SUV. It was constant incline with not much shade so for hikers and bikers might be hard. I drove through all the way to the other side to the Rim of the World Scenic Byway. After the guided trail is done just continue with the road that is showing on the map. You can see my recording as well. That stretch of the road is much less traveled with overgrown bushes and more loose rocks and ditches made by rain. It would’ve been harder to go up but still it won’t be anything little 4x4 cannot do. I have stock 2019 Wrangler with mud tires. Pretty easy going down with great views of the cities and mountains. The noise in the other hand was quite loud from the city motors. Found a nice hill almost at the end of our drive to stop and have a lunch. That’s where I stopped my recording. A lot of little grasshoppers but didn’t bother us while we were in the car with windows down with panorama city and mountain view in front of us.

I liked it but the wife and kid did not. 3 miles in we turned back. You’re on the edge of a cliff the whole time.

9.8mi, 1914ft gain, 3:35 moving. The whole trip was on a forest service/OHV road, so it was wide and easy to follow. I was surprised at how well kept it was for being in the San Bernardino area, most trails are either completely trashed or blocked by homeless camps around there. We only had to share the trail with a couple of paragliders who stage their gear from the base of Marshall Peak, however you can either hear of see the 215 for about 85% of the trip which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Ice was scattered on the path above 3650ft, but it was only a minor inconvenience without micro spikes and not a concern as of 1-14-20.

I hiked this route yesterday. No shade on 90% of the trail. its steady uphill most of the way. i would have rated this trail higher if i hadnt been attacked by large black flies. didnt get bit but they are aggressive and it made the last 2 miles up and down difficult. I'm sure some repellent would help with that. also i burned through 3 liters of water pretty quickly so pack accordingly. not bad for a local hike. Not bad but not the best. Hulda Crooks depending on your route is more manageable and less insects and its local as well.
