Very soon after the discovery of gold in 1848 near Sutter's Mill, Major Pierson B. Reading discovered gold on Clear Creek. Mining, in one form or another continued on in earnest for 130 years. The result was a creek turned upside down. Due to the wildly successful efforts to restore its salmon runs, Clear Creek now hosts large numbers of spawning fall Chinook. Although the best place to see this spawning is at the Gorge Overlook, you can witness this miracle of nature at several sites accessed directly from this trail. If it is not salmon spawning season, you can still enjoy some of the earliest gold working features in California and expect to see some of the abundant wildlife within this biologically rich corridor.

Great trail! Very secluded and pretty much handrails the sac river. Dog friendly. Trail has some areas that are multi track and single track. Walked my 3 dogs down about 3 miles of the full trail. Very pleasant experience, I’ll definitely be back on this trail again.

Great but stickers and overgrown bad but really nice and private. We took a creek swim and float down a little ways then walked back to packs and finished last 3/4 mile.

Started at Gold Dredge trailhead per this app. Only able to go a little over a mile west before I would either have had to swim or bushwhack to continue. Turned around and went a little over a mile east of the trailhead until I was stopped by the same conditions. Trail is not well marked, I assume due to flooding this winter. On the upside, there were no bugs, or people, and I saw a two bucks. All in all, a 4.7 mile outing.

We didn't do the whole trail, but started at the overlook and hiked west. We crossed the creek (tricky when it's flowing good!) and hiked up to see the narrow and dangerous part of the gorge. Beautiful and powerful! Be careful in that area. Headed west a little more to where the creek turns north. Enjoyed being able to cut off in different directions from the main trail. Crossed back over the creek, did probably 2 miles total. Will be back for more! Great opportunities for exploring and enjoying the water.

Nice hike. The trail was better before they put in a parking lot. Nice places to stop and play in the creek. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes.

Okay trail. Probably better in summer after all the paths have been cleared. Pretty much washed out 1.5 miles in. You can follow other paths along the river and probably meet up with the trail again but overall hard to navigate. Needs maintenance. Update: went back two days later and back tracked from the honey bee trail head. Trail now goes down and follows the water. The route on here is wrong. Lots of overgrowth but still pretty easy to see trail.

This was my first time hiking this trail and certain parts of the trail are hard to find because it got washed out by the rain and high waters. Had to constantly rely on gps to keep on track but around mile 1 I could not find the trail to continue the hike. There are no signs and a decent road but kept leading north and away from the trail.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1317995141 Trails along the creek were well kept, there are challenges if you choose to go down from the overlook into the gorge, for example, but otherwise almost no elevation. In other words, it’s easy and you can out and back as many miles as you’d like. I recommend this as a picnic/fishing day. So much to explore! My dogs loved it.

I didn't do the entire trial because I had my baby on my back but we did about 5 miles and it was beautiful!!! There are so many places that shoot off the trail what give you great views and many of them lead you down to the water. I will definitely be hiking it again!

I just discovered this trail system and I am in love! Just a short drive from town to avoid the hobos and tourists but close enough to be convenient. It's a well-maintained and scenic trail. NOTE: if you're walking the dog, be sure to take a leash - some parts are appropriate for off-lead hiking but Clear Creek is a busy, high speed road and there are multiple crossings between the Gorge and Horsecamp trailheads. Between Honeybee and the Gorge there are multiple plyometric displays that make for fun intervals. Lots of creek access and picnic groves.
