Difficulty: Easy Mileage: ~2 Pets: Dog friendly View: Carlsbad, Tri City, Lake Calavera What to bring: Small water or nothing Parking: Street Fee: Free Time: ~1 Super easy stroll to the top. Easy ascend, no challenge here. It’s a good hike for kids and families as it’s an easy one to start your kids into. It’s not that high up. Many people. It’s a local neighborhood hike.

I wouldn’t recommend doing the super steep narrow route that this app suggests unless you are very sure of your footing and don’t have dogs with you pulling every which way we found an alternate trail to get down that was more manageable, and also made a stop at a little clearing with a labyrinth made of rocks which was pretty cool

Did this loop in reverse and going downhill on the frontside was pretty steep/tricky but otherwise a great hike :)

Cool hike past a lake and over to an extinct volcano! How often do you get to see that when exploring Southern California?!? Although I didn’t see any cool wildlife, there were pics of bobcat, rattlesnakes, & roadrunners seen in the area! I made the mistake of not wearing my hiking boots or running shoes with traction. They would have came in handy on the steep incline & decline sections. This hike does not offer too much shade so unless you like the heat, get here early or during the cool months.

This trail should be marked moderate because if you follow this route it is the quickest ascent and descent possible from the top of the extinct volcano. Rock scrambles are present and it gets very dicey at some points on the descent given the extreme grade. Poles recommended.
