Great hike though tough. Be prepared with lots of water and protect yourself from sun. Big hill at the beginning that’ll make your heart pound but then great views from the top.

Longer than indicated by All Trails because there are gaps in the official recorded hike. Actual distance is over 16 miles. A lot to see, with many shade spots sprinkled along the way.

Such a lovely trail! Great views on both side of the trail. Ocean view and scenic Mountain View’s all in one. Not much shade overall but there is some in the first/last couple of miles. The first 2 or so miles are definitely steep and get your heart pumping but so worth it overall with the views.

If I could give this hike 6 stars I would! Parking was super easy and the beginning is a good uphill, workout. The views from all around for 95% of this hike are stunning. Great ocean breeze and only a handful of people on a Saturday. Trail is wide enough that you’re not close to anyone and one easy path to follow. Most of the way is rolling hills. There are also awesome rock formations after the first half that you can sit and take a break on! Not too much shade so I would suggest SPF and lots of water. Total around 12 miles to the end point and back. My new favorite trail and a must to do!

Beautiful trail, with enough shady spots and ocean breezes to keep the first 3.5 miles pretty cool. Last bit is full sun, so dress accordingly! There were lots of ground bees on the fireroad, but they mind their own business. Look out for aggressive mountain bikers and runners coming downhill- there was pretty terrible trail etiquette on display this weekend (even witnessed a screaming trail-rage fight). Bonus: some fruit vendors set up at the trailhead so there’s nice cold fruit waiting for you at the end!

Easy fire road trail with great views. Miner bees have taken over a 40 yard stretch of the trail on the way up the peak before Castro. I only got stung once before I turned around... That aside, great ocean views and Conejo Valley from the backbone. Parking lot max fee $8.

Beautiful trail! The first couple miles are very steep, but as soon you reach the crest, it's much easier, almost rolling hills. There is cover for the first (and last) mile, so bring sun screen & be prepared for exposure 90% of the time. We encountered a large swarm of bees right around mile 5. They seem to be digger bees & didn't sting while we walked slowly along the side.

Beautiful views the whole way, but only 10% is shaded. Also, that 90% is a fire road with a steady incline. Overall, loved it for the exercise and the view with my dog.

We started off with intentions of completing hike listed in title, but we got bored and ventured off a bit. The first 3 miles was steady incline the entire way but after about half a mile it was mostly fire road which I despise. The views from the fire road were gorgeous, which everyone would enjoy more on a narrow trail but you can miss most of it when you walk up a wide fire road - all you notice is road unless you get closer to the edge. We saw a narrow trail along a ridge line toward the ocean to the left and decided to walk that instead. Looks like it was trail to Mesa Peak or Mesa Ridge and we continued past this to a cross overlooking the ocean and Pepperdine University. Beautiful views. From trailhead to the cross and back it was 8ish miles. So glad we ventured off. It saved the hike!

Loved the hike! The views at the top are beautiful! Be careful parking at the Puima trailhead parking lot, my car was broken into and I had credit cards and ID stolen.
