Getting There

Please note that portions of this trail were closed as private property. The trail and peak are now reported to have been reopened. This hike first descends into Upper Solstice Canyon where the pleasant, mostly shaded trail follows a seasonal creek bed. As the trail begins to rise out of the canyon, the views get progressively more spectacular. First, lovely folded green hills emerge, followed by large sandstone formations in the distance. As you gain elevation, ocean views become more prominent. On a clear day, you can see most of the Channel Islands, Catalina, and the Santa Monica coastline. Once over the crest, seemingly endless layers of mountains abound in an almost 360 degree panorama, including views down into Malibu Canyon and beyond.

Malibu Creek State Park, 818-880-0350

From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, head 5.5 miles inland on Corral Canyon Road to a dirt parking lot where the road dead ends. Note that Corral Canyon runs between Malibu Canyon Road and Kanan Road. The best way to take this hike is clockwise, starting with the trailhead for the Backbone trial on the west side of the parking lot, then returning on the Castro Motorway (a fire road).

Nice for sunset! Really nice views and overlooks to crawl around on to isolate yourself and take it all in. I took my time, and set some timelapse videos here and there of the mountain range.

Awesome hike with great views. Don’t be sketched out by the drive up - you’ll make it and it’s worth every penny! Views can be skewed when really foggy. Gets hot quick because of lack of shade.

This hike is awesome. In spring time, there are flowers along the trail sides and beautiful views in all directions and of the ocean. Went on partially cloudy day with a nice breeze so the temp was perfect but there is no shade so would be very hot mid summer. End of May 2020, there were a few patches of burrowing bees that took over the entire trail in places. They didn’t care about humans but could be tough with a dog or kids - saw several groups turn around but we walked through and were totally fine. Overall it’s an amazing hike I’ll definitely do again.

Absolutely stunning. Trail is actually closed though. Navi will misguide you. Get there through PCH and drive up Corral Canyon Rd until the end.

Really enjoyed this trail! Parked on coral canyon road and went out ~3.5 miles. Could have gone a little farther towards the water, but our dog was getting worn out! Nice elevation changes, pretty views. Plenty of parking along the road; would recommend getting there early in the morning to avoid direct sun and lots of other people. Trail was in great condition and would actually be perfect for more mountain bikers looking for a trail with lots of elevation changes

Beware of theft. Our car got broken into and cash and debit cards were stolen, we were notified by our bank that they attempted transactions at Nordstroms in Canoga Park.

Under cloud cover today until about an hour and a half before sunset. Dramatic misty accent to the panoramic views and scorched trees. Party members repeatedly dumbfounded by the grandeur.

Cool rocks to climb on at the start of the trail. It’s downhill to the peak, so it’s all uphill on the way back. Did it last June, and it was HOT with no shade. Recommended for early in the morning or cooler times of year.

Mesa Peak is now part of the Backbone Trail and is no longer blocked off by any gates. Did this from the bottom to the top with zero gates, zero signs. Great trail, can be a bit brutal in full sun with only one small grove of trees.

A nice hike with lovely views. It's open but the fence is of course there making the loop impossible. Go left at the top instead of towards the gate and you can get a good view of the ocean and into the canyon.
