State Park currently closed, however, I found a good place to park outside of the park and just did the extra mileage. The trail gets more difficult as you go. Where the trail fades, I picked up a trail to the right (toward the Dome) and was an easier way than the brushy area. Believe the other advice on taking water and starting early on hot days!

I would start early in the day. Once you hit the trail end, look straight towards the Crags. There is a small climb but you'll get an incredible view of Mt Shasta

I parked inside of the park and then took the Castle Crags trail via the Root Creek trail. Climbed at 6:30AM and had the mountain to myself until 9 AM. Amazing views! A truly special place. Some of the best granite formations I’ve seen.

We did this trail but started from inside the park - from Vista Point parking lot (the entrance is $8). I definitely recommend starting there as I don’t think I would be able to do 2 extra miles. It’s a strenuous hike especially towards the top. Wear proper hiking shoes as it’s a lot of walking up / down rocky terrain. It’s also very lightly trafficked (not even moderate) - we hiked on Sunday, July 5th. It starts in the shade, you walk through the forest but you start gaining elevation pretty quickly. When the rocky part begins, the views are stunning but there’s very little shade. We enjoyed the hike but you need to be prepared physically, wear good shoes, sunscreen and take at least 1L of water per person.

Pay the 8.00 for day use pass and park in the lot for the Vista Point Trail. Walk in opposite direction of Vista Point Trail to start the trail to Castle Dome. Gradual incline that is shaded, hiking poles made the hike a bit easier. Pack lots of water , a hat, sunscreen and a layer to shield from sun/wind. Hike to the top is strenuous , I’d rate the hike overall as moderate. Took us 1.5 hours to get to the dome . Have Fun!

Great hike and super views. Go early and you have to trail all for yourself. Not to difficult and only moderately strengthening. I will definitely come back

Beautiful hike to enjoy if you are taking a break from I-5 driving. Good trail for running. The scramble up to the top of the dome is excellent. 3rd class. If you got yourself into 4th class terrain you’re off-route. The PCT in this section has several road sections. It’s not the best.

If you start from the alltrail directions, theres a detour with an extra mile to Hike to the vista point parking lot, per recording. Takes you to the vista point parking lot via kettlebelly trail . Brilliant hike with amazing views of the 3 ranges, the tiny hike to vista point gives you an awesome view of what youre about to hike

This trail is beautiful from front to back! Getting to the end is well worth the effort! Although the trail is wide, smooth, and under tree cover the majority of the way, the last mile or so is a bear. Rocky and exposed! I was lucky it was warm and muggy (even rained a bit) when did this trail. Wouldn’t want to do it on a hot sunny day. Also, keep in mind you are climbing all the way to the top. This trail does not have the usual ebb and flow of other trails. There are very few flat spots and when there are they are very short. Loved the begging meander up through the forest. I stared at 8 am I think. Only saw one person going up. A handful going down. Great time to go since the kids are back in school and the weather is still good. Wouldn’t want to be here this Labor Day weekend! Forgot to mention. I did the whole trail despite the glitchy recording First time the AllTrails app let me down.

Truly spectacular views just past the trail’s end. There are views of the dome and peaks at several points along the second half of the trail. But you fully understand why the term castle is used when you scramble to the plateau about 200 meters past the official end of the trail. Note that if you start the trail from the vista point parking lot you will shave about two miles off the distance compare to the starting point that AT shows. Given how steep the trail is, I was very happy we started at the vista point lot.

Fun moderate uphill hike with a fantastic view. There are multiple ways to get up but easiest is from the Vista Point parking lot where I started. The weather for my hike was overcast with patches of sun and some sprinkles thrown in. I Left the top once the thunder starting rumbling, so double check the weather. On the way down around noon about 10 people were going up and the parking lot was getting full with hikers and Vista point people, so start early. Highly recommend especially when the weather is nicer for better views.

Amazing views, absolutely worth it. Try to climb every possible place and get every possible view up there! I'd recommend sturdy shoes and go in good weather.
