This trail is open from October 1st until December 31st. Great hiking place. Been coming to this trail pretty much every weekend for the last 1 1/2 months and I have encountered bighorn sheep every single time I am in Carrizo Canyon.

Hiked this trail Saturday. Lovely, easy hike. Added benefit was sighting a family of bid horns traversing the hills to the water hole in the canyon below the dry waterfall.

Nice diversity in vegetation...even a decent display ferns following the riverbed flow. Just a trickle of water right now so climbing up further was easy. Loved the hike!

Love this trail....walked up to the big dry waterfall. Lots of animal prints in the sand and big horn poop everywhere but never saw wildlife. Maybe next time!

Very interesting for such a short hike. Wide open wash at first, then narrow shady canyon, turn left at the Y and walk up to an overlook with a view of the valley and a palm oasis. If you turn right at the Y, a short walk brings you to an interesting dry waterfall. It looks impassible, but it's moderately easy to climb up. You'll have to judge the safety level, but there are lots of hand and foot holds on stable rock. At the top is a few palms.

Hike only accessible when gate is open between October 1-December 31. Easy hike in soft sand up to first palm tree. Moderate hike up to waterfalls and outlook. Hard hike if you are adventurous enough to scale waterfalls. I have heard path past waterfall on the left path at the Y doesn’t go far. But if you can get past waterfall with big rock on the right path at the Y it goes further into an oasis. Oasis can be seen from the outlook at top of left hand path.

Hiked from Alternate Parking; beyond the almost worn off trail sign there is no trail per se for the first mile or so as you head towards the mountains. I simply followed all the footprints through the sand and scrub. The fun begins when you finally get to the canyon because it rises at a fairly gentle rate for most of the trek interspersed with many rocks including a half dozen 5-7 foot mini rock climbs that require some agility. The largest one (10-12 feet) comes just before the overlook. Easier to climb over than it was to get down. There were several other hikers and I noticed that some required assistance climbing down but it's definitely doable if you can handle modest climbing. The reward is the overlook which provides views up and down the waterfall area (of course, dry at this time of year). It was my first canyon hike and with he mountainsides looming next to you on both sides it made a totally difference experience than my typical trailside hikes.
