Description
Waypoints (4)

Note: As of September 10, 2020 users have reported that the toll to get in at the top of the hill is closed so you’ll have to walk down/up for a while. Please be aware of the self registration fee of $10 for parking/day use. The hike starts off flat along a connector path by a drainage canal before a steep descent to the river in a series of cutbacks. The river views at the bottom are worth it and there is a picnic table. It’s easy to go along the rocks to the rivers edge. The hike back up is a bit of a scramble, especially if it’s rained recently. It's a great workout. This trail lives up to its name in getting your heart rate up! If you bring your dog, be aware that they will need to be somewhat agile.

It definitely lives up to its name and was a great workout. My driver side window was smashed and something was stolen out of my trunk. wish I would’ve parked a little further up roadside with many other cars than in the small parking lot that I did.

Well the cardiac part isn’t lying. The hike back up is steep rocky and sandy. There are parts you can bypass and it’s not as bad. The hike down wasn’t too bad. The views once you get to the river are beautiful. Make sure you hike down and put your toes in the water and have some lunch. I also saw lots of deer.

Just a heads up the toll to get in at the top of the hill is closed so you’ll have to walk down/up for a while. My step/elev counter measures the walk down at 24 stories.

Some of the signs on the trail are confusing and I ended up doing a combo of this trail and the cardiac bypass trail. Nevertheless it was a very good workout and the view of the river at the bottom is killer!!

Awesome and not for the beginner hiker, little kids, or people who love wide- dirt road trails- but that’s exactly why we loved it! The river at the bottom is spectacular - and cold - take in a foot soak in the ice cool water before you hike back up. Here is where the trail earns its name, especially if you don’t take the bypasses. It’s just over a mile but straight up! We sweated hard and loved it, even got to pick lovely ripe blackberries too. Go to the Newcastle cheese factory after for a lovely lunch on the patio- their sandwiches are the best!
