This is one of the favorite Big Basin hikes: it starts on the legendary Redwood Trail near the park headquarters, heads over to Blooms Creek Campground and zigags up the Pine Mountain Trail -- leaving the redwood forest completely for awhile -- then culminating with a steep scramble to a rocky overlook. You can see pretty much all the remarkable diversity of Big Basin (except the waterfalls) along this route.

Brought an older hike group up the trail on a quiet weekday in the park. It was a clear, sunny day in the 70s and since most of the trail is shaded, very comfortable, even the open exposure at the top. What a great place to have lunch! Love the views and going from redwoods into chinquapin and knobby pines. Most had trekking poles and all were well prepared with good footwear. This was helpful for the bit of rock climbing needed along the trail. The trail is mostly single track, so put your faster pace hikers in the front as long as they can be relied on to read a map or interpret park signage. Having been here before, we didn't take any wrong turns on the trail but our total mileage was more like 4.7 miles with 1200' elevation gain.

Good workout on a quiet trail, even on Labor Day. Most of the hike is in the shade, but the top is in the sun. I wore my Sketchers walking shoes and they were just fine. You do need to climb a couple of boulders, but nothing too hard.

This a great hike with just enough elevation to give you a great workout. It isn’t super crowded so you’ll find yourself pretty alone most of the hike if you start off early enough. Pretty shady and simply beautiful

Good workout! gains elevation at reasonable pace. Trail is pretty shady. No shade at the top. We hiked in March so was not that hot when we reached the top. Views are amazing once you get to the top.
Signs along the trail are not so clear, we got the trail info from info desk before starting. I have read reviews that if we get lost, it adds up few miles to your hike.
Did not see lot of people while on trail, not so crowded. Some parts of the trail are narrow but just walk carefully, its totally doable. Couple of big rocks which come in your way and you have to climb and get to the other side to continue. Loved the trail and will come back!

It was a good work out trail and took us about 2hours and half on slow pace with my 9years old son. At the top, the view was so beautiful, absolutely worth to try this trail. We passed a couple of groups.

Great secluded hike very quiet and the views from the top are outstanding.

Started at 9:40am, on a Saturday, and saw only a handful of hikers on the trail. It's a slow burn all the way up but it's beautiful at the top. If you look past the rock on Buzzards Roost, there is another rock marked 1968 on the map. It's a short walk from Buzzards Roost and fairly easy to climb. But it does take effort to get to the very tippy top. The view is awesome and it's a nice place to rest (bring a hat!).

A great view from the top of the surrounding valleys. A bit tricky to find the trail but grab a map from the ranger station and they can point you in the right direction
Took about 2 hrs

Very quiet and nice trail with great views at the top. We went midday on a Friday and did not see any other hikers on the trail. It took us about 2.5 hours in total.

Good hike. Good shade. There are some good up hills on the way in.

Nice hike with a pretty view. It would be helpful if trails were marked more clearly. We got lost a few times

Great views, pretty steep climb for the last part of the hike. Would give it 5 stars but the trail markings were unclear and we ended up adding an extra 3 miles of hiking trying to find our way up to the top.

Fun hike you can do in a little over a couple hours and get a great view from the top. It's a nice workout with the climb, but not enough to be too much for those of us who haven't been hiking in a while :) Slowing the pace can allow any of your friends to tag along, nothing technical.

Lots of climbing but in a good way; the views are rewarding. Glad we did this on the first day when we had lots of energy and were anxious to get moving.
