Pretty good climb up to Widow Lake. But the swimming was well worth it. My boys and I went for a good dip before we turned around and went back. Well marked trail was very easy to follow. Stopped at a rock on the east side of Butte Lake on the way back in and got another good swim and the chance to dive off the rocks. My wife even took a dip at this spot and loved it. Nice and sandy on the bottom at that end of the lake. Did a kayak trip of the whole lake the next day and got to see just about all of it.

Backpacked this last weekend. There’s a good mixture of shade and sun on the trail. It is a pretty flat trail until about the last mile it gets pretty steep up to the lake. There was only one other person that stayed the night up there which was nice. Found some great spots for camping up there. Nice flat areas. The lake was a perfect temperature to swim in but the lake bottom was similar to gooey sinking sand. Also, the creek is dried up so don’t count on that for better drinking water. On the hike back down about 1.5 miles from butte lake campground we ran into a large bear. So make sure you rent or buy a bear canister for food! And wear bear bells or play music on the trail so you don’t scare them. Overall it was a great hike and the lake was beautiful.
