Good trail. Tough in the snow. Only made it 1/2 mile past the waterfall.

We were really set on backpacking Lassen but the east side of the park was closed, so we used this for a quick getaway. The elevation made it a more difficult hike than it should have been, but it was really gorgeous. We camped at Conard Meadows and were the only people there. Things to keep in mind: 1. Yes, the hill after the waterfall is intense 2. Crumbaugh Lake is gorgeous, it doesn't get enough credit for how beautiful it is 3. Cold Boiling Lake was much better than expected, a very pretty lake 4. The hill from Cold Boiling Lake to see Bumpass Hell Overlook is intense - but it's worth it and the views along the way are absolutely gorgeous 5. Sure, we did the Bumpass Hell boardwalk, but everyone is right, the best part of Bumpass Hell is the overlook. Conard Meadows was a great place to spend the night, it's quiet, provided great star gazing, and had a couple of nice peaks that caught the morning light just right. Disclaimer: You need to pack all your water in, there is no immediate water source there.

Camping is first come first serve at the Southwest campground. We arrived on a Thursday and it was pretty empty but when we got back from the hike Friday evening it was packed so try to get there early. The incline from the waterfall to the first lake was definitely the toughest part. pretty smooth sailing from there. long trail, took us about 7 hours to finish

Great views with a variety of different landscapes and views!! Clocked in just around 13 miles from the campsite and took 6.5 hrs with a few breaks!

This one definitely had a little bit of everything! I feel like I got to see several of the notable sites in the park in one go. Do the boardwalk if you want to get up close and personal at Bumpass Hell but soak it in from the view on this trail to really take it in. There were miles long stretches where I didn’t see anyone so you can definite get some seclusion even on a busy Saturday. However, this is definitely a grueling climb and I clocked in around 14 miles. I was happy to have a pump for extra water with me.

Fortunate enough to have two cars over that weekend so we parked one at the Bumpass Hell trailhead and started the hike at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Very nice uphill hike through the forest, with beautiful landscapes (Mill Creek Falls, Crumbaugh Lake, Cold Boilig Lake and off course the Big Boiler, Turquoise Pool and Pyrite Pool at Bumpass Hell). The trail is well maintained, a bit dusty due to dry season. Highly recommend this if you can do a Point to Point hike, but you can also consider doing it Out & Back.

Gorgeous trail- highly recommend if you are looking for a longer day hike in the Lassen park. Compared to the Mt. Lassen peak trail, this trail has incredible variety— meadows, lakes, mountain vistas, and the unique Bumpass hell. This trail is demanding. There is one part between mill creek falls and crambaugh lake // boiling lake with a long and steep ascent. Highly recommend bringing hiking poles. We didn’t see anywhere to swim on the hike, but the natural features provided enough shade for recharging. It took us 7 hours, with 1.5 hours of breaks to take in the scenery. Don’t forget plenty of food & water!

Extremely fun trail! Nice creeks, lakes and meadows! A little challenging for beginners but it’s totally worth it once you reach the top.

Incredible hike. Within 2 miles is the waterfall. Then comes Crumbiugh Lake, one of the most breathtaking lakes you will see. After that it’s a brutal climb to the top to take in the geothermal pools at Bumpess. This hike is no joke. It is extremely difficult. Took us approximately 7 hours to finish it.

Did this trail yesterday. One of the better hikes I’ve done in many national parks. In our 30’s, fairly fit and it was a challenging 12 miles that took my wife and I a little more than 5 hours. Bumpass Hell will likely have very few people because it’s closed from the other side. Great features throughout the hike. Waterfall, giant meadows, lakes, views, thermal pools. Get out there!

This is a great way to see a bunch of the parks highlights. From the Mill Creek Falls to Cold Boiling Lake to Bumpass Hell with a bunch of other great bits in between. The park had the short entrance to Bumpass Hell closed off due to snow. It would be a shame to miss this part of the park!
