“ Sweet Pea” is posted closed by State Parks. It is not a legal trail. Let’s keep respect our public lands by keeping to legal trails!

The hike up Sweat Pea that is technically closed but doable if experienced. Sweat Pea is 1,000’ one mile climb. The first 1/4 mile has numerous intentional blowdowns to discourage hikers. Once past those it’s well maintained but a solid grind up. Once on the ridge it is wide open but it was a beautiful clear and cool day so it was quite nice. Good vistas with more bikers then hikers. The downhill via Jewel is pleasant and transitions you back to the park and tree cover cross Marin paved trail. The creek side trail gets you off the pavement for much of the return trip along Lagunitas creek and the redwoods. My Garmin showed 7.7 miles and 1,200’ of elevation gain...did it in 2:30 minutes.

Beautiful hike, mostly exposed after the first part in the shade. We did it the wrong way - definitely recommend going clockwise as suggested. Only about 20% of people were wearing masks. Please bring a mask with you and put it on when you pass people to keep the trails safe!

Fun hiking up through the fog in the redwoods. Best bit of the hike at the beginning. The rest is very chill- probably more interesting with clearer skies. Clockwise def the best way to go.

Very steep for a mile, and then no shade for the next 4-5. Decent hike, but not recommended on a hot day.

Fun trail with different terrains. A little over grown on some parts and no shade for at least half the hike. We parked at the Redwood Grove Picnic Area and started at the trailhead there. If you start here, you will hit the peak quicker then it’s smooth sailing from there!

mostly sun exposure, wish had been more in the trees. Did it in reverse of recommended, emlong steady climb ending with steep decline.

Excellent option if you’re staying at Samuel P Taylor. Redwoods, creek views, rocks and logs to climb on and beautiful valleys. But the section on the ridge trail were not as nice as I had hoped they would be.

Hiked this loop in a clockwise direction. The Sweet Pea trail is not marked, but clearly a trail. Pay careful attention or have the All Trails app open. The last part of the hike can be done on a trail next to the river or on Taylor Park Rd. About half this hike is through a lush forest and the other half is along the ridge, which on clear days has views of Tomales Bay.

First to Review

Wonderful hike, lots of nature to see, a portion of it is asphalt which wasn't great but still beautiful! Saw two bobcats as well. Bring extra socks in the wet months. Didn't see any restrooms out on the trail, just something to think about. While on the ridge, a few parts of the trail were completely flooded. Also, the Sweet pea trail is closed due to erosion issues. We went on it anyways due to time constraints, there were a few steep and slippery portions but we took them slowly. Definitely an enjoyable trail, could just use some upkeep
