Blue Sky Canyon Trail is a 5.3 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Poway, California that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Careful With dog’s paws lots of loose rocks and tons of poison oak!
"OK" - this is a combination of a flat nature trail in Blue Sky plus the Lake Poway loop which has one steep incline section and then it's very easy. It does send you straight into the big recreational park with tons of people plus includes the beginning of Mt Woodson/Potato Chip. There were hundreds of people and about 50% didn't wear masks in defiance of park mandates.
Nice easy trail with beautiful views. Fog made it pretty cool and couldn’t see all the overlooks but still nice. Easy to distance too.
Beautiful day & beautiful scenery! When you hit the split around the lake, our advise would be to take the left side for a more gradual incline & the right side for a steeper (glute) workout.
Beautiful trail. Try the trail close to lake and take Creekside trail in the beginning
We went hiking on Saturday 11/28. It started out a cold morning and got relatively warmer as the hike progressed, so dress in layers. There was some shade during the first 1 1/2 miles, regardless, it was a good day to go hiking. However, there were a lot people out and about (Thanksgiving weekend) and some weren’t wearing masks. There is no shade around the Poway Lake trail, so bring your caps, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If you’re hiking solo, be sure to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes and Mountain Lions. Nonetheless, good trail for the family to enjoy the fresh air!
Poway does an amazing job taking care of their trail system— this was no exception. Very very hot today so make sure to have enough water and try to leave early. Most people were respectful with masks and although lots of people, didn’t feel like some of the other local hikes that are like zoos.
Overall a nice hike. I would rate it easy vs moderate. Lots of beautiful oaks at the beginning with acorn woodpeckers. If you’re doing the Lake Poway loop I suggest looping clockwise so you get the steepest part of the loop done first. The trail itself is kept well and there is no scrambling. If you go at noon at 93F you will have a nice quiet hike. The only negative was people hiking with loud music. It scares the birds away and disrupts the peaceful hike. Why bring sucky music to nature? Can’t wrap my head around that one and it’s so inconsiderate to other hikers and nature lovers. Lots of poison oak so stay on trail. Creekside trail was closed today.
