HikingGreat!

Scenic view and overlook, and not crowded. This was steep, and sand in spots on the trail. The Black Sand Beach and views of the Bay Bridge are beautiful.

Absolutely loved this hike. Not crowded at all, and people were respectful about pulling on their masks when near others. Some decent steep sections but overall pretty relaxing

Wonderful inclines and declines throughout the out and back trail. Gets a little steep closer to Black Sands Beach but other than that very nice!

Nice wide trail that leads to a beautiful black sand beach with excellent views of the city and peek-a-boo bridge views. The trail begins at the high point of the hike, taking you on a gradual decline until you reach a meadow. A short incline leads you back to the road and the small beach parking lot. A steep but well maintained trail leads down to the beach. I tend to prefer hikes that start with an incline and end with a decline, but this trail was pretty much downhill all the way to the beach and uphill all the way back to the car. Trail is wide and most people were wearing masks, but there were a fair number of bikers heading downhill fast. Overall an enjoyable day but not my favorite hike.

Finding the trail was a bit confusing but you’ll want to go to the back of the parking lot to find the trail head. The sign won’t say “black sand beach” but you’ll walk along a bike trail around a small mountain for a ways but you’ll eventually see a turn off for black sand beach. The path will descend rather quickly and parts are a bit treacherous. So be prepared to test tour balance!

Beautiful clear day hiking to the beach, a nice mixture of up and down hill, lots of little coves on the beach to soak in the sun!

Not much of a view until you get all the way to the beach side but it’s amazing! Budget some extra time to hang at the beach. The stairs back from the beach are the hardest part, rest of the return “up” is less taxing. You could also run the route backwards (start at beach and go up, then back down) if you’re able to find parking down there!

Trail was nice and cool views. Only thing is that it is mostly used for biking and not hiking so constantly moving out the way. Also, on the way back it is a lot of uphill so if you have knee problems take that into consideration.

Great hike but the reviews were not an accurate representation of the views you’d see during the hike. This is a great hill-sy hike that takes to Blacksand beach; however, you are not able to see the golden gate bridge on this hike.

The headlands always offer some of the best views in the bay and this trail is different in that it also has the best views of the city as well! The trail is moderately challenging and very beautiful but I don’t think it’s the best hike in the headlands. Parking is tight and not plentiful for a Sunday evening, not sure how much better it gets during weekdays. Julian Trail was full of mountain bikers, the beach was decently busy and Hawk Hill had a large crowd. Most tourists not with masks of course :/ I think there are many other areas of the Headlands that are just as beautiful and leagues less busy.

Great trail. Fairly low foot traffic even on a Saturday. Lots of cyclists on the fire roads though. Overall a low to moderate intensity hike. I forgot to turn off my GPS at the end of the hike.

Good hike, took me about 2 hours. Very steep in some spots with lots of stairs going down to the beach. Saw lots of lizards, some deer, and a coyote!
