Joshua Trees, Pinyon Pines, Spectacular Mountain and Desert Views With a trailhead situated at about 4000 ft. elevation, the Panorama Loop Trail within the Black Rock Canyon area of Joshua Tree National Park offers some of the most interesting flora and spectacular views within all of Joshua Tree National Park. Located within the northwestern-most portion of the park, Joshua Trees are plentiful and temperatures are much cooler than in the parts further south, and the botanical and geological "surprises" to be encountered by a Black Rock Canyon hiker, to say nothing of the spectacular views of the San Gorgonio Mountains and surrounding desert terrain, make this sandy and often uphill trek very worthwhile. The trail, which begins adjacent to campsite #30 in the Black Rock Canyon Campground, is well-signed-be sure to keep your eyes open for the markers with the letters "PL" (Panorama Loop). Obtain a trail map at the Ranger Station/Visitor Center, wear sturdy shoes and gaiters, and carry plenty of water-there is NONE along the trail.

Very pretty hike! Taking the loop clockwise is the better way to go.

Amazing views once on Panorama Loop. Mostly flat (and sandy) hike but right before you get on Panorama Loop there is a short set of some relatively steep switchbacks.

Great hike through the great flora of Joshua Tree. Some good views atop the ridgeline as well.

Enjoyable hike with decent views. Best views are only during a short duration of the hike. Wide and easily navigated trail.

Great trail. No shade until you enter the loop (then it’s limited). Beautiful views. We went anti clockwise which was great - meant we did have to go downhill on some parts which were steep (so best to wear hiking shoes). Fun hike and gorgeous views. Bring water and wear a big hat and you’ll be fine. Took us around 3.5 hours. We stopped due to the heat walking up to the Loop.

Started around 6:30 am, and it was a little chilly while the sun was still coming up. It takes about 3 miles to get from the parking (which is free) to the panoramic loop portion of the trail. Once I got to the loop I went clockwise, which ended up being a good decision because it was steeper and I got the hard part out of the way. Definitely was tough getting up the hill but it’s a moderate level hike overall like described. I got back to the car at 9am. The views from the top were incredible, and I would recommend this trail. It is sandy for 75% of the trail, so if you’re not into that maybe this isn’t the best option.

First hike ever in Joshua Tree NP...loved it. Especially when you start going up the P loop. Super windy & cold but sun was out & so fun!!!

Great hike with incredible views. We went up the loop counter clockwise and it was a gentle incline with a steep decline coming back around. Beautiful, would do it again.

Beautiful day and surprisingly not crowded on a Sunday. The challenge heading left is prior to viewing the beauty of the area and the return is long but easy. We did 6.7 miles and enjoyed the desert surroundings every step of the way.

Sandy wash most of the way...stunning views at the top!

We started around 9am and almost had the trail to ourselves. We did the loop clockwise and it was a good decision as we encountered a steep climb to the top and the rest of the hike was gradually up and down. We saw green grass, lots of lizards, and 2 black/gray deers crossing the wash. We saw a lot more hikers started their hike as we exited the loop. The view at the top was breathtaking.

Beautiful trail through interesting narrow canyons/washes with lots of vegetation. Did the loop clockwise and the views coming down were impressive. You are hiking on sand on the Black Canyon section.

Nice trail. Sandy wash adds some challenge. Trail in good condition. Located at Black Rock Campsite, which is far west side of park and therefore shorter drive vs going all the way into park. Also, free to park at that location. Good variety of plants, many Joshua Trees, pines. Good birdwatching. No boulders like in center of park. Got there at 9am. Very few people on trail. Stark contrast from Hidden Valley at 2pm. Recommend clockwise for views of mountains on backside.

Great trail.. a lot of sand! I went counterclockwise and it was gorgeous!

Really cool trail. It takes you through the sandy wash up to the face of the mountain, around and back down. When you hit the trail sign for the loop, go left (clockwise) as the other reviews mention. Gorgeous views! Took us about 2 hours and 40 min!

We went counter clockwise on the Paronama Loop and it' was a steady incline. It got more windy towards the further point from the loop. We turned around and went back. It's a beautiful route.

Great trail - hiked Jan 3. A little snowy and slippery towards the top, but still manageable with sneakers. Beautiful views.

Great day. We did the loop clockwise which was hike wise because the light snow that remained on trail was easier to balance going up than down. The views were spectacular and I look forward to a repeat performance. Loved it

Wonderful hike with splendid views and very diverse landscapes to admire. One of my favorite trails in Joshua Tree National Park, and I’ve done a few. There is a little bit of snow and ice, but nothing impassable. Hike the panorama loop clockwise to get the icy part on the way up.

Did the hike this morning. Started at Black Rock campground and only made it 1/4 of the way up Panorama Loop before turning around due to time constraints. Will definitely go back and complete the entire thing. Beautiful trail and the parts we encountered were relatively easy. Long gradual climb up a wash before you get into narrower little canyons along panorama loop. Stunning views and solitude. A must visit.

Great trail- I took my wife and 4 children and they did just fine. The trail had gradual slopes and great views. Some areas are still icy. Good hiking boots are recommended.
