The Beachwood gate used to access this trail from Beachwood Drive will be closed permanently to hikers on 4/18/2017. Visitors should use the Brush Canyon Trail from Canyon Drive, 2 blocks to the east of Beachwood Drive off Franklin, or Griffith Observatory. Canyon has a parking lot, sidewalks, trash cans, and facilities for visitors. This is the stairway on N. Beachwood Dr that's a shortcut to Hollyridge Dr. This is a great easy to moderate hike if you are visiting or new in town with great views of the Hollywood sign. At the top is a great 360 degree view behind the famous sign.
Despite different website claims, we parked on Beechwood (no time limit, lots of open spots but no parking Fridays-Sundays) and walked up. There is a guard posted at the top of Beachwood Drive. Beyond the guard is a public access gate that was open. Regular locals access the gate for access to Griffith and the Hollywood sign. Moderately steep incline on some slippery gravel to the Sunset Ranch sign and the trail to the Hollywood sign starts to the right just before the Sunset Ranch sign. The rest of the trail clearly marked. The rest of he trail is a mixture of moderate inclines and flat ground. Bring water!
Its great hiking however going back down didn't we didn't make the right turn and end up at wrong place but it was overall it fun
So this is a drag, but the city just announced that the trail to the Hollywood Sign can no longer be accessed from N Beachwood Drive starting April 18. They are permanently locking the gate. ;-(
The directions on here will get you to the area but really you need to start at Los Angeles River Park. you can park next to it and hike from there. it's about a 1.5 hour hike just walking. you have to pass the do not enter signs but once ya get to the trail (about 20 mins in) it's a easy route to follow. Great Views!
Not too long. But steep. Definitely a workout for the lungs. Almost no shady areas, so prepare for sun. Went on a Friday. So had no problems parking on Beachwood Dr. almost right at the trail entrance. But God help you if you go on a weekend. :\
Awesome hike... constant views of LA and the Valley as you wind through the trail to the top of the sign. No parking in neighborhood but I read other reviews to get advice on were to park!
