Getting There

As of September 2020, trails in this area are closed due to wildfire. See park page for more information. Lake Views, Interpretive Signs and Brochures, Well-Maintained Trail The Woodland Trail provides an excellent introduction to and explanation of the flora indigenous to Big Bear Lake. An informative interpretive guide is provided at the trailhead, with descriptions corresponding to the twenty numbered signs along the trail. Differences between Western Juniper and Incense Cedar are explained, and a number of very common plants discovered at this altitude are identified. The approximately one-and-one half mile loop features mildly steep sections along a well-maintained trail, making this hike is an appropriate warm-up hike for "flatlanders" adjusting to the mountain altitude prior to treks along the Cougar Crest or Gray's Peak trails located nearby, and spectacular lake views existing near the loop's completion provide an enjoyable experience for hikers of nearly every level of ability.

There's parking at Woodland Rd.

Big Bear Ranger District-(909) 866-3437

From Highway 18 in the city of Big Bear Lake, drive to the Stanfield Cutoff and turn north. Continue to the junction of Highway 38 (North Shore Drive) located along the north shore of the lake. Turn left (west) and drive approximately 3/8 of a mile to the Woodland Trailhead along the right side of Hwy 38, about one mile east of the Big Bear Discovery Center and immediately across from the East Boat Ramp.

Easy dog friendly, kid friendly trail. This trail had signs throughout the trail so you know how much longer you have until the end. We finished it in about 30 min. So it would be the perfect trail if you have kiddos. Super easy. I like that there is a parking lot for the hikers so we’re not parked on the side of the hill on the windy road.

Nice short trail. Not too scenic as far as viewing the lake goes but was easy to knock out to get the day started

Not very flat and challenging enough to not be bored. Nice views and plenty of small wildlife to see scurrying about.

crowded but not too bad. don't forget to buy a parking pass in town or park on the road outside the parking lot. there is one restroom (not fantastic but does the job) in the parking lot.

Amazingly beautiful! Best do this later, as to avoid getting overheated. Should have sprayed with insect repellent, but didn’t get too eaten up. Beautiful, well kept trail

Great for out of towners to get a feel of the land. Nice brief views of the lake and ski slopes. Good balance of shade and sun. Bring bug spray, but they aren’t too terrible. Some nice rock formations for the kids to climb on. My 4 year old made the trek ok. My 11 year old loved it. Air is a little dusty but has nice pine accents. We did this hike in early August.

My 11-yr old son’s favorite. Not strenuous with mild inclines. Areas to explore. Lizards and squirrels.

I’m not an experienced hiker. No hiking shoes for me. Just wore my Nike running shoes, sunblock, and bottled water. I’m a city gal. This trail was great! It’s across From the lake. I began the hike the opposite end. No biggie. Seeing the markers decrease helped me get motivated to finish the trail. Saw rabbits, squirrels, blue jays to name a few. It was a good experience..

Easy trail to do with kids and pets. Several areas of small boulder piles to climb. Some shaded areas but mostly in the sun. Trail is well maintained and easy to follow. Did on a Sunday and surprisingly not many people on the trail.

Great trail for a quick hike with family. Our youngest is 10 and she had no trouble at all. We saw lots of lizards and one rattlesnake. We only saw one other family group while we were out.

This is definitely NOT stroller friendly. There are a few steep areas but it’s nice and clear and there is plenty of shade for a quick rest. We went with our 10 year old and wore our 11 month old twins in wraps with no issue. Like others mentioned, we couldn’t find where to pay for parking even though there is a huge sign that states there is a fee (with NO instructions). We just parked and figured a parking ticket wouldn’t be too expensive and didn’t feel like dealing with researching a permit/pass. (In the end, we were not ticketed)

Overall enjoyed the trail but it had a lot of incline which made my son get tired too early and we turned back. Also in the summer I would go early because it gets hot even by 10 in the morning. I would say there is only some shade on this trail. Fun times on fallen trees and rocks!

Great trail for kids, dogs and even baby wearing! Intermittent shade and sun, lots of breaks for those kids who aren’t accustomed to hikes. No need for hiking boots, tennis shoes are just fine if you’re worried about that! Overall, great hike for families.
