This hike is on a very nice portion of the Bay Area Ridge Trail which starts at the Tilden Park Steam Trains parking lot, going to Redwood regional park, and returning. The hike covers EBMUD lands, and goes through several East Bay regional parks, including Tilden, Sibley, Huckleberry, and Redwood Regional Parks. The terrain and scenery actually varies quite a bit, from open, dry hillsides, to fern and moss covered grottos. Some portions are completely in the open, offering great views, while others are under extremely dense tree cover. You actually walk over the Caldecott tunnel on this hike. Portions of the trail are in such dense greenery, you literally walk in tunnels through the brush.

What a great hike! I covered so much ground and went through so many different types of forest, which opened up to various views of the surrounding terrain. I like how the track loops through both the upper and lower sections of Huckleberry, which provided a nice change of scenery on the way back.

I took a couple detours. I walked up the paved path to the water tank in Sibley to look out at the extinct volcano. In Redwood Regional, I headed south to the Prince / Stream intersection to see if the lady bugs were still active. There were a few stragglers, but the thousands that were there in January had moved on. I also walked down to the Grizzly Peak Blvd Overlook close to the end and sat on the graffiti-covered tree to soak in the stunning views of the bay. All in all, I racked up a little over 16 miles. Not bad for a Sunday morning.

One I'd forgotten I'd done when I lived nearby.

Dry and hot at 830 am. Did alittle over half the trail out and back due to time constraints. The last 2 miles coming back is mostly uphill but relatively shaded. I'll wait until it cools down though to do this trail again. Didn't see anyone until the last mile. Loved being out there solo.

A nice hike. A lot of varied terrain, with the highlight for me being the lush woods in Sibley.

The forest ambiance is reduced a bit by this trail being so close to the road -- for large chunks of the trek you can hear (but not see) the cars passing nearby.

I'd recommend skipping Roundtop peak, as it's just a grubby radio tower with poor views.
