Bay Area Ridge Trail: Skyline Wilderness Park and Napa Solano Ridge is a 9.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Napa, California that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, horses, and mountain biking and is accessible year-round. Horses are also able to use this trail.
East of Napa State Hospital in the southern foothills of Napa Valley, this out-and-back trail is for hardy hikers and careful equestrians and mountain bikers; it is a narrow, often rocky trail. After a steep climb in the first mile, the trail ambles through oak forests and high grasslands to views of North Bay marshes and mountains and then continues beside a perennial stream to the far reaches of the park. In October 2017, the Atlas Fire burned through most of Skyline Wilderness Park and re damage surrounds the Ridge Trail. In the months following the re, hundreds of damaged trees were removed. Start early, particularly on warm days, and take plenty of water. The trail arrives to Suscol Headwaters Park, which opened in 2020 and has several new trail slated to be opened by 2022. In addition to the vistas along the ridge, hikers may choose to enjoy the .2 mile-long Lookout Trail. There is a parking fee. Restrooms are available on this trail. Beautiful on a rainy day. A little muddy but not bad at all. Peaceful. One of my favorite places to hike. Many trails. No dogs allowed and $6 fee to park.
Great hike! Lots of ups and downs and treelined areas. So pretty. I was tired at the end and that’s a good thing.
Great workout. Good terrain with lots of sun and equally lots of trees/ shade. Can be crowded on a nice day. The renovated part of the trail is nice and pretty. The best views are along the ridge before you reach Pissoni Road, and just after that there is a great viewpoint. I saw a family of deer just as I started, not far from the trailhead. Also, lots of nearby trails and tangents if you want to take shortcuts, or explore from this trail.
