Getting There

Experience the wild western shoreline on the Batteries to Bluffs Trail. This rugged route takes visitors along the cliffs bordering the Pacific Ocean, allowing hikers to explore historic gun batteries, seeps and springs, coastal plants and wildlife, and stunning views. This short trail provides a great way to see the bluffs near the Presidio and offers views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin that are hard to beat. The trail has several places with steps and some climbing if you decide to take the side trip down to Marshall Beach - a quiet, isolated area surrounded by rocky serpentine cliffs with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Try hiking this trail near the end of the day to enjoy a long sunset over the Pacific Ocean and the lights of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The closest restrooms are located at the Fort Scott Ballfield, near the intersection of Lincoln Boulevard and Storey Avenue

Parking is available in the lot at the start of this trail. You can also start the hike at the southern end of the trail and park in the Baker Beach parking lot.

Nice and cool with the ocean breeze. Great view of GGB but so much garbage at the beach and on the trail. Please pack your trash out!

One of the most beautiful trails I have ever seen. You are right next to the Golden Gate Bridge as well as Baker Beach. Such a beautiful place to take pictures! Super easy walk!

It’s by Presidio. There is a trail that leads to Marshal Beach. It’s a 10-15 min trail going down some steps. Not crowded at all for a Saturday. We brought lunch and ate it on the beach. Good spot for a quick hike. They also have other trails near by that you can go explore.

Probably my favorite presidio trail, great views of the bridge (when it’s not too foggy). Nice workout with all the steps on the way and then pretty much all downhill coming back along the road. Would highly recommend for a weekend stroll!

Beautiful trail, definitely take 30 minutes to go check it out, you don’t have to do the whole thing to see the beach or the gate

Great hike, so close to iconic golden gate, we arrived around 12 and beach was empty, kids played in water and had great time, beware there is nude beach after you pass rocks when walking under bridge

HikingOff trail

Nice city trail that allows you to walk around Golden Gate bridge to Baker Beach. My issue with this trail is that it repeats a lot of the same scenery, but that’s a given since it’s not a loop. It’s listed as dog friendly and once you get to Bluffs Trail dogs are not allowed according to the sign. Although there were a couple people that took the dogs in. Bluffs Trail is actually the hardest part of this walk because it’s all stairs on Bluffs. The rest of the trail is not difficult. I chose to stay in Baker Beach longer to let the dogs run around instead of completing the last loop, but I think that’s fine because I’ve been there before. Parking is not near where the “start” is, so just add on that walk if you park your car.

A good set of stairs, to and from (up and down) from some beautiful beach access. Rocky beaches below with a bit of sand offered a quiet place for our packed lunch and a little sand! After a bite to eat and a little wandering, pander back on the trail. The road route is along the side of the cliff/beach overlooking the Richmond and sea cliff. Even on an overcast day, would do again. BONUS, my 18month old was able to walk the trail with me— most of it anyway

I loved this trail, it’s so beautiful when it’s sunny out. It had just rained earlier in the day, and there were a few muddy spots, but nothing so bad that you couldn’t traverse. Very well maintained trail. I went the reverse way - parked on Lincoln Blvd. (next to the Battery Crosby trailhead/Sand Ladder), and I’m pretty glad I did. Made for longer descents starting and finishing, and only one steep climb back up from the beach.

Great views all the way. Coming up will get your breath pumping but it’s pretty short. Got there with my dog and saw the no dogs sign, took her anyways and saw other dogs too. She loved Marshall beach!

Make sure to take the Batteries to Bluffs trail off of the Coastal Trail. Great scenery, fun trail and the Bridge is magnificent! World class in my backyard!
