This is a highly popular attraction with incredible views of Los Angeles. There are two ways to reach the vista; one way is to walk up a steep set of stairs. The other way is a series of more gradual dirt switchbacks that also reach the summit. The route on this page was the hiker going up the stairs, and then down the switchbacks.

Can someone tell me if this trail is open? Please let me know in your review. I see people are going but I’m not sure if they are going even if it is closed.

Did this city walk in lieu of a real hike given the rain last night. Ppl in town do these stairs all the time, including me. Made up for lack of distance by climbing the stairs five times and walking down the switchback; ran it the last time. Equivalent of 3 miles, 900 ft elevation gain, except you get to rest in between going downhill. Pretty good workout! Downside, tons of people even (especially?) during week. Everybody beautiful and put together. V few messy hiking types like me :) Also zero shade. NOTE: a small section at the bottom of the stairs was being worked on and was inaccessible. Access to the next landing available via the switchback.

Great workout hike. It has stairs all the way up or if you prefer of road trail, it has it as well

Easy to access urban staircase, about 315 foot elevation gain. Even at a slow pace, with plenty of time to rest between each flight, you can still get up and down in 20-30 minutes. The views from the top are extraordinary given the urban setting: Santa Monica and the Pacific to the West, Hollywood Hills straight ahead of you to the North, and Downtown to the East with the San Gabriel mountains behind it. There is also a winding trail to hike instead, which crosses paths with the staircase between flights. As others have mentioned, the bottom flight of stairs is closed off for repairs. Other than that, the stairs are in great condition. The new cabled handrail system isn’t strong enough to use for support, but it made me feel safer coming down, so I didn’t get vertigo this time. Benches at the top but no shade, bring water.

Some of the stairs were out from a recent rain, but got the heartbeat up!

Section of steps closed. Heavily trafficked. Nice views and ton of parking.

Some of the steps are out of commission

You can take the main steps to really kick your butt or you can take the switchbacks for a more endurance hike

The main trail and stairs are open. Path is well cared for and views from the top span from the ocean to the Hollywood sign. Trail gets crowded.

Amazing panoramic views. They are restoring a lot of the trails right now but still quite enjoyable.
