Drive through giant redwoods in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Northern California Humboldt Redwoods State Park encompasses 53,000 acres of forests, meadows, and watersheds and about 100 miles of hiking, biking, and riding trails. Approximately 17,000 acres consists of old-growth coast redwood forests, including the 10,000 acre Rockefeller Forest, the largest contiguous old growth redwood forest in the world. The 32-mile Avenue of the Giants parallels Highway 101 and winds its way through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This road was originally built as a stagecoach and wagon road in the 1880s. Today, the Avenue of the Giants, also knows as State Route 254, is considered a scenic alternate to Highway 101. There are several opportunities along the route to access Highway 101. Along the Avenue of the Giants eight Auto Tour Stops designate panels and interesting places to stop. Look for the Auto Tour sign to indicate where to stop. Stops are generally about 200 feet beyond the Auto Tour signs.

Drive not a hike. Great if you’re on your way around the area.

Beautiful drive through some amazing trees! If you can start at the southern end, I think the northern end is prettier. I only wish that there were more hikes associated with the eight stops. We made it work with a special stop at Founders Grove and made a loop with the Mahan trail as well as the trail with stop #8 (Drury Chaney trail), but if you want more I’d look into stopping for a more substantial hike elsewhere in the park.

AMAZING drive! It is crazy how close some of the trees are! You can reach out and touch some of them from your car! I could drive this everyday and never grow tired of it!

No drive up the California coast would be complete without driving (and ideally hiking) through Avenue of the Giants. There aren't words or pictures that can grasp the magnitude of these trees and the utter silence that falls in the forest as soon as you step off the road. These giants seem to live in a world all their own, casting a spell over anyone who wanders through them. What a delightful drive in a serene little corner of the world.

Of course you should take this drive! There are many spots to pull over and wander through the redwood groves. The Eel River flows behind the groves and can be accessed by a quick walk through the woods. We spent most of a day driving, stopping, looking, photographing, and hiking. It was well worth it.

Much more impressive than I imagined it would be. I always wanted to witness the Redwoods since I was a kid in Texas thumbing through encyclopedias looking at pictures of them. Was sad to leave this area when it was time to go. Awesome!!

Gorgeous drive. It's well worth your time to drive through all the giants regardless of how much time you spend camping and hiking around. Truly impressive.

One of the prettiest drives anywhere around. When I was young it was the only highway there. My 1st memory of it was at the age of 10...

I loved the Avenue of the Giants. Its so calming driving between the tallest trees in the world. A great place to stop is the Immortal Tree, which is located at the end of the drive right before you get back onto the 101.
