As of August 2020, this park is currently closed due to wildfire until further notice. See here for more info: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=30009 Pretty hike starts with a steep climb and descends into lush redwoods at state park north of Santa Cruz This is one of the best moderate hikes at Butano State Park. It can start out from the park entrance or from the campground. Highlight of the loop is the Año Nuevo Trail, which make a rugged ascent from the park entrance to the Olmo Fire Road. On clear days you can see the Pacific coastline, but often you'll be hiking in coastal fog. IF you time your hike to coincide with the fog's burning off, you'll have splendid views of the ocean and the redwood forests rising from the coast. The loop then descends under a thick redwood canopy until it reaches the campground, where it's a level walk back to the parking lot. Butano is a great place to hike all year, especially during spring wildflower season.

Dress in layers -- it can be quite chilly at the start of the hike but warm on the parks' high ridges. Call the park to make sure it's open before you go. Contact: 650-879-2040 Hours: Call the park Parking fee: $10/vehicle Driving directions: From San Jose, take Highway 92 west to Half Moon Bay and head south on Highway 1 for 15 miles. Turn left on Pescadero Creek Road, go 2.5 miles to Cloverdale Road, turn right and go 4.3 miles to the park entrance. From San Francisco, take Highway 1 south through Pacifica; from Half Moon Bay, follow the directions above.

Pretty steep climb to start, but there are stairs cut in. Very shady, really pleasant hike. $10 honor system parking at the trailhead.

Great hike. I was just using the parks map so got a fun surprise with the initial big climb. just what I wanted though. Beautiful hike. Wanted to do the longer version via the fire road but I'm in Donut Quarantine shape. Only bummer was hearing the screaming kids as you descend back towards the campground (July)

Honestly one of my favorite hikes, a good strenuous start on the quick incline and then a wonderfully lush and leisurely descent down through the rest of the loop. Counted 173 banana slugs during December. Fair amount of newts as well.

The steep hike up at the start of Año Nuevo trail was the perfect way to begin 2018! I didn't download the hike and just used the paper copy at the Ranger station. I got off track a bit around the Ben Ries campground, but walking on the road the last bit of the way wasn't bad. Super serene, sweet hike.

Jan 17 trip - muddy and slippery with rain in the last 24hrs, although great park and can't wait to come back with better conditions! Moderate when dry. Hard when wet. More trails to choose from in State Park!
