Nature trips

You can literally enter this trail anywhere so you don’t have to preoccupy yourself with parking anywhere specifically and it’s not “closed indefinitely” due to Covid nor a fire. If you’ve encountered a closure you’re probably on the wrong trail. It has some nice inclines and views. Low elevations put you alongside some nice homes and right in some of their backyards so just be kind while passing. There’s a bench somewhere along the 3 3/4 mm where you get a good look at the city all the way to the ocean on a good day. Pretty even amount of shade vs sun and I bet it would be a good run. I’ll be back for that without the kiddo. There are more benches the closer you get to lake with some pretty cool Super Mario artwork. Overall starting this trail on the west end has been my best experience and you get to see all the people stress out over parking as you approach the other side.

Hiking

Entered the trail at Tanoble Drive since Pinecrest entrance is supposed to be closed. Surprising amount of up and down for a trail that essentially follows the toe of the mountains. Trail is well-maintained and mostly exposed. Nice local hike for a morning work-out.

HikingGreat!

The nearest gate to the trailhead, Pinecrest Drive, is closed to control crowds at Eaton Canyon. To access this trail, you need to make a reservation for a timed entry at Eaton Canyon. Start your hike from Eaton Canyon entrance and hike an extra 1.3 miles in. Adding 2.6 miles to this hike. My entry was at 2. Started my hike at 2:30. I hiked as far as I can get and turned around at 4pm. They lock the gates at 5pm! If you get locked in, there’s no way out. Need to call the sheriff to open the gate. My dog really slowed me down. He likes to stop and lay down. He is a puppy full of energy but even though it was not hot today, the sun rays we’re getting to him. The trail is exposed with some shady parts depending on which side of the mountain you are on. The hike out of Eaton Canyon is fully exposed even on our way back. If I didn’t have my dog I could have completed the hike to the end. 6 miles rt was too much for him in August. I will try this hike again earlier in the day or when it cools down. We got lucky today, it was only 80 degrees when we hiked but the trail was mostly exposed. You hike along the mountain and could see the neighborhoods below. Beautiful views. Nice wide, well maintained trail. I didn't see anyone else on the Altadena Crest section of my hike. Lots of families in Eaton Canyon heading towards the waterfall.

Good trail. Decided to go further than the published trail but decided to go back when I got to a sign warning hikers of serious injuries and death. No one on the trail due to county trails being officially closed. Gate was still open when I got here expecting it to be close. #covid19

Walking

Walking stick and grooves soles are helpful on this tiny start up to Pacific Crest Trail. Sun, light breeze made it nice.

This hike is a great alternative to Henniger Flats if you’re looking for decent incline but less total mileage and overall elevation gain. Good workout and generally far less crowded than Henniger and Eaton. The trail is well-maintained and very picturesque, with pretty vistas of the foothill neighborhood below. A lot of exposure and only a few small pockets of shade, so make sure to get an early start on hot sunny days. Park and start on Pinecrest on weekends, or go through Eaton Canyon during the week for more mileage.

Good work out, but no fun ending. Consistent up and downs. Great views and aromatherapy! Went during a sprinkle and really enjoyed the nice clear views after rain & the overcast fresh breeze & the aromas. Decent glute activation ;).
