We took the trail up to the cross! I would not recommend going down the other side and rounding around the river back to the truck like we did. There were 15-20 trees down that really had some sketchy places to go around. At one point trying to find a way we walked right into a pretty bad bog. Just a total marsh and the mud was like quick sand. Had one of the horses sink back end almost up to the hip. We couldn’t tell that we mud was so deep. Ended up getting out safely but in the mist we had a rein break. Thankfully we pack halters and lead ropes! We had to get off and walk horses around several times. I will not be back to the cross for AWHILE the trail needs MAJOR work! All of the storms have really done a number on the trail sadly. The trail to the river has a few fallen trees but they are easy to maneuver. Haven’t tried the blue marked trail that seemed to be new, will try it next time!
A strenous but rewarding hike. Goes over mountains and follows streams. Great views and scenery. Well worth the trip. Even though it is a equestrian trail, it seems to be lightly used because it was not rutted out or was there alot of indications of horses.
