Our plan was to hike from Tyler Bend Visitor Center to Collier Homestead and back. The trail was nice at the beginning. At the bend, prior to the main trail headed towards the homestead, there is a caution sign warning hikers of steep drop offs and the danger of falling. We should have heeded the sign. After the first spectacular view of the Buffalo River, we continued until we came to a section of the trail that narrowed to less than one foot wide. It was right at the edge of a drop off. The trail in that spot canted downward to the edge. There was alternate footing with some tree roots that may have allowed you to pass, but those too were canted towards the edge. If you were to lose your balance, or to slip and fall, there were no trees, nor significant vegetation, to impede your rapid descent. You would suffer severe injuries, maybe even get killed if you lost your footing. This obviously happened in the past, otherwise there would be no need for the sign. Because of this, we exercised prudence. We turned around, headed back to the visitor center and drove to Collier’s Homestead. In summary, if you are an inexperienced hiker or have a fear of heights, this trail is not for you.
