Penny Campsite Spur Trail via Ouachita Trail is a 9 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Roland, Arkansas that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, nature trips, and backpacking.
Penny campsite is the only place where camping is allowed along the Ouachita Trail within the Lake Maumelle watershed. It is reached from the OT by a 0.9 mile spur trail. The campsite is located at the top of a hill with no water. It is little used, fenced (with a gate) and has with tent pads with fire pits. The nearest reliable water source is 1/4 mile west (Reece Creek) from the start of the spur trail. Near the top, there are views of Lake Maumelle from the spur trail.
I will be going out Tuesday September 17th to check on trail and camp site conditions. I will also try and clear some of the over brush on the way to the campsite from the gate entrance. I have used this trail and campsite many times in the past and would like to make sure it is still being used and kept proper. I will also be hiking from highway 270 to Pinnacle Mountain on September 6 to the 12 . so I need to make sure this campsite is good to go
The OT is fairly boggy due to all the rain in the last two days. The spur trail needs some major work. The beginning of the trail is marked but there’s about 2/10 of a mile that is overgrown and the blazes are virtually non existent. I would not want to try to find my way to this campsite in the dark.
