Running

I have run and hiked many sections of this trail in both the winter and summer. I contracted the worst case of poison oak in my life on the section between Brady Mountain and Crystal Springs one summer. I also had an encounter with an angry flying black snake in the section from Brady Mtn to the spillway. It’s quite an adventure this trail. In the winter it’s littered with a lot of leaf debris hiding rocks underneath. The section up top of Big Bear mtn between Brady and the spillway is difficult and technical to run but no problem to hike. The pine needle floor in the section near the Blakely Dam is gorgeous and there are amazing views of Lake Ouachita throughout. It is well marked and often very deserted which I enjoy the solitude. Many nice stream crossings as well. The best time of year to tackle the trail is fall to spring. I would never try to run the crystal springs to Brady section in summer again! Enjoy this gem.

Great trail. We entered through the Brady Mountain trailhead and went West (it also splits to the east). We spoke with a Trail surveyor before entering and he told us that the West Trail leads to crystal springs but we did not make it that far. This labeled Trail is about 2mi in and is maybe halfway to the springs according to the map. We got to the third overgrown area and the ticks were everywhere so we decided to turn around there as we were not dressed appropriately for ticks. Overall the Trail is gorgeous if you want some forest time. One area where you can see the lake but the view is overgrown at this moment.

Trail was beautiful and very well-kept. We started at Brady Mountain trail head and hiked to spillway. They were gorgeous huge rocks all along the way. There were two benches sit underneath some rocks are at the base of some rocks that have a nice tribute to some people see the photos. We also saw another interesting site along the way someone had put a boat chair up there also see the picture. There were beautiful views all along the trail. We also saw some man-made rock formations along the way which we added our rocks to the formations that were already there being very careful to keep them intact. We haven’t seen this before so we didn’t know if it was something that all hikers do but we thought it was pretty cool and we added our contribution

The trail was beautiful but this was not 3.4 miles. We never made it to the end. We hit 3.4 miles and turned around. We crossed 4 streams on our way up. We entered right by the sign. Can anyone give direction on where in the hell we were? It was labeled as this trail. Lots of up and downhill. We saw Ouachita through the trees. Never saw a view.

First to Review

Trail was a great workout, albeit overgrown in places. The view at the end is fantastic. That said, the trail has tons of ticks and poison ivy. Wear long pants and a hat, otherwise you’ll be pulling ticks off your legs for a while after.
