Getting There

Buffalo River canoeing features the most scenic icons of the upper Buffalo River, including: the majestic Big Bluff, and the awe-inspiring Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, both the largest bluff and waterfall between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountain Ranges. Big Bluff can be viewed along the direct route, but Hemmed-In Hollow Falls require a 1 mile (roundtrip) hike from the river. The water route also includes many other scenic bluffs, including the amazing Roark Bluff, a majestic painted bluff created from the acidic rainfall of the region. All in all, this section of river is some of the best in the whole Buffalo National River.

Enjoyable kayak trip in May. Mostly easy going, but we had a spill in one rapids, and twice had to help other groups that hit trouble in rapids. Did the hike to Hemmed in Hollows from the river.

I prefer the Current for nature/sights and Niangua for a Bourbon Street on a river situation. Buffalo stays quiet, but it wasn't memorable enough for me to come back.

Kayaked Ponca to Pruitt over two days, stayed one night at Kyle’s landing. Absolutely beautiful trip, want to go the whole 130+ miles!

Awesome views, enjoyable kayaking. It is not too rough, but has some easy white water to make it more interesting for teenagers. It is well worth the cost to rent kayaks and pay for the shuttle. The short hike to the falls at hemmed in hollow is easy and worth it for the scale and rock formations. The amount of water falling is limited but the height impressive.

Awesome kayaking trip. Two nights prior, I camped out in a cave on Big Bluff, whose views were spectacular. You could see it from the river on the way to Kyle’s Landing. Big Bluff is around 500 ft up, I believe.

Did Ponca to Kyles Landing on the upper Buffalo, 10.6 miles. Great stretch of water, very scenic, many bluffs, winding river, very remote. Some nice white water, up to a class 3 when we were there, normally up to class 2. This stretch has to be floated in the spring. Your lucky to be able to float this after the first of June. Came back on a second trip and did from Pruit to Hastings, another 7 miles. This route also take you past the tallest waterfall in the state. You can beach the kayaks and hike to the falls from the river.
