The Arkansas Arboretum Trail is located near the center of Pinnacle Mountain State Park within the 80-acre Arkansas Arboretum. This 3/4-mile long, paved barrier free walking trail only, is dedicated to helping students, visitors and Arkansas citizens understand the variety and many values of Arkansas' trees and forests. Interpretive signs with recorded messages located around the trail help introduce the state's trees and its naturals and geological history. Guided tours for groups and field study classes may be scheduled on a staff-available basis, by appointment. In order to protect the arboretum and arboretum visitors, please observe the rules: 1) All plants and animals are protected (do not pick leaves for flowers). 2) Please remove all trash or litter. 3) Horses, bikes, or motorized vehicles not allowed. 4) Pets must be leashed. 5) Winter hours 8 AM to 5 PM.

This is a great little trail that is often overlooked by park visitors. The main loop trail is paved and wheelchair friendly and takes the visitor through the different types of trees and shrubs from the different regions of Arkansas. There are also several short (0.2-mile) natural surface trails for the slightly more adventurous. Although this trail isn't as exciting as climbing to the top of Pinnacle Mountain, I think it is a great little walk in the woods.

The park offers many different programs and special events on the Arboretum Trail. I attended what the park called the "Owl Prowl" on this trail and loved it. The park ranger has recordings of owl calls and plays them over a speaker at/after dark. I couldn't believe how many owls we saw and how quiet the owls are in flight. I highly recommend that you check into the park's program - they are usually very good.
