Wilson Mountain is 7,122 feet tall and named after Richard Wilson. Richard Wilson was a bear hunter who was killed by a grizzly in 1885. His body was found in Wilson Canyon, which is also named after him. This is the tallest mountain around Sedona, Arizona. The trail to the summit leads to an absolute killer-view of Sedona and far beyond, of Oak Creek, and even of the San Fransisco Peaks. The hike has two parts: Part 1 goes up to the First Bench. This can be done from Midgely Bridge (most exposed, but most scenic) and from Encinoso Picknick Area., also called North Trail. Part 2 goes from 1 bench to the Sedona Lookout. If you start out late, or loose your wind, only going up to 1st bench is well worth the effort. But the Sedona Lookout is unsurpassed, as you can see! A stunning, vertical drop of several hundred feet straight down, looking right into the famed red-rock stone sculptings of Sedona. Absolutely amazing. Although hot and at least moderately strenuous, well worth the time.

One of sedona's best hikes, but be sure to leave plenty of time.

there are really three parts to the hike to know and plan around. The first big climb up to the bench, part 2 to the summit trails, and part three which is typically a quick 10 min to the Sedona lookout, or another 30-40 min to the north lookout.

if you really want to explore the best parts of the hike, plan lots of extra time!

This is now one of my favorite trails. You get a little bit of every type of forest with every 500ft or so of elevation change, and the views are breathtaking. Well worth the effort to reach the top.

Challenging hike but well worth it for the views of not only Sedona but the surrounding areas. Difficult to run due to rocky terrain but I suppose it is a mountain after all. Lots of folks looked pretty miserable on the trail- not a lot of shade. Parking sucks but upside is there is less traffic on the trail.

Misleading mileage. Once you reach the summit, there is still another 30 minutes to hike out to the Sedona viewpoint. I did not have time to do this, as that would add an hour and about 2 more miles to hike. I hiked to summit and clocked 11.5 miles. I imagine with the vista it’s nearly a 15 mile hike! There is no vista at summit, as it’s hidden in trees, which is always a disappoint after such a grueling hike!

Extremely narrow trail that’s slippery with scree and dangerous drop offs. Trail desperately needs widening. It definitely will not be safe following another monsoon season.

Most amazing views in Sedona! Hard hike with many layers to it. Do it! You wont regret it. Bring extra water for dogs and go early because you are exposed the entire time and it warms up quick

Loved this hike! Views were stunning along the entire trail! pretty steep incline the whole way up, but the view was totally worth it. We finished the trail in about 4 hours. We are in our early 20's and are experienced hikers.

This was a great *hike* - but I’d actually wanted to trail run. Unfortunately, the terrain was just too rocky to get a good cadence going at any point. Amazing views though, and I’d recommend for hiking.

Probably one of the best trails/views in the area. Mostly because very few people actually hike to the top, so you'll have a little peace and quiet after the first mile or so which is a rarity in Sedona.

Love this long hike.

Snow from about 6,000ft up. I thought this was a more moderate hike. There were only a handful of really steep spots. Would be a great trail to work on long, uphill running. The downhill was pretty fun cruising. I only did the North Canyon overlook, and the trail there from the junction was mostly flat.

Longer hike in sedona area but a fun one. Went to both overlooks on the trail and the while things ended up being about 12 miles. The hike to the overlooks is not as exciting but the overlooks are worth it!

This hike was decent, but I think there are better ones in the area. It took us about 5 hours to complete

Very rocky trail so shoes with ankle support recommended. Beautiful views of Sedona at the top. Somewhat limited parking at the trailhead.

Wilson Mountain trail (+North Wilsom Mountain trail back and forth) was one of our favorite in Sedona. Doing both is a significant hike but it is worth it. The view from the top is great. It also feels special to walk on the plateau for so long, passing through the forest fire. If you do the North Wilson path, you will go through a microenvironment that includes maple tree. Being in november, we had the great fortune to pass there while the leaves turned bright pink (!). It was very special and unexpected. If do Wilson Mountain, you have a great view from red rock mountains at the begining of the trail which you have also on the way back. We stayed midway down for the sunset and it was magnificient (bring light and some warm layer if you do that).

This is one of the best trails I’ve ever been to. It takes 6-8 hrs to complete depending on your speed. But the view at the top is incredible. I will go back.

Went up north Wilson trail this time. Always a favorite of mine. Spectacular views. About 4 hours round trip. Went to Sedona overlook this trip but either one is breathtaking.

My wife and I did this walk in Oct. It is amazing the views as you go up are incredible and one at the top wow. it has some steep sections. Going down was harder (we just had runners on and no poles) as the terrain is rocky and some of them are loose. took us about 5 hours.

Awesome hike with great views. Only say one other person the whole day. Start at the North trail head. It took us 6 hours to summit and visit both lookout points. Really great hike!

Strenuous for this 64 year old. 3 hrs up, 2.5 hrs down. Glad I had my trekking poles. The trip up passes through junipers, then scrub, then a small oak forest, ending with Ponderosa pines. View at top is unique, but it’s some work to get there.

Nice hike. A little rocky for my taste but the views are great.
