Getting There

Closed as of July 2. Wildfires have burned more than 224,500 acres and there is ongoing, extreme fire danger due to dry conditions and hot temperatures. The spectacular views at the top and the shaded cave make this a great hike. The trail has a steep climb at the end and a rocky descent.

Awesome hike! We did this at the end of April on a Saturday and got to the trailhead at around 6am. We reached the top in about 20 minutes or so had the cave to ourselves for a little while before the crowds started. I suggest getting there early to avoid people and crowds!

BEST. HIKE. EVER. The most gorgeous view and destination point to lookout over. Definitely good incline to get those glutes working. Hiking boots highly recommended. 10/10 recommend.

View from the cave is great. Last incline is a harder than expected but worth it! Lots of bugs, not much shade. Wouldn’t recommend starting later than 6 due to heat. After completing the trail sheriff greeted us and evacuated us from trail due to fire. Trail will possibly be closed for some time, check to see updated on fire before heading out.

Beautiful morning no bugs, beautiful cave at the top. Recommend starting no later than 6 to avoid the heat and parking at the Trailhead.

Overall, fun hike. Go early because there's not much shade. The end was quite difficult for my novice level but I just took lots of breaks and took in the beautiful scenery. Lots of wildlife like jackrabbit, birds, lizards and bugs. I'm super thankful for the white arrows along the path after I crossed through the narrow wire gate.

Start early, it gets very hot and there is no shade until you get to the cave. Very steep and rocky at the last incline up. I would almost rate the last half mile of the trail hard! Some parts of the trail are hard to follow so the app map really comes in handy. Views were amazing and the wave was so fun!

Definitely a great trail! I’m not an expert hiker at all and this is moderate but doable. Using the AllTrails app was helpful because we had to park on the Lost Goldmine lot and had to cross onto the Wave Path but the app was so helpful! Go through the orange wire part of the fence to get on the actual Wave Cave path. The actual cave was super cool and a bit of fun with a beautiful view. I’d just advise being very careful on the way down because of the loose rock. I slid a few times but no tumble thank goodness! Worth it for sure!

Gets steeper at the end. Please remember to bring water. The scramble and cave were worth the hike. About a third of the way through the hike, the trail crosses with another and we lost a mile taking the wrong trail before we realized our mistake. The signpost indicating the trail is worn and simply painted on wood, so be careful. AllTrails is accurate if you’re checking. Fun hike with a great ending

Totally awesome trail! It gets steep toward the end of the cave so bring lots of water. I will say about 3/4 of the way up there is two paths take the path on the right which is easier if you take the left path it goes near vertical at times. So left if you want a challenge or right if you want to not die. We went in summer and the cave must have been 15 degrees cooler which was a wonderful rest area.

This was a fun hike. It’s doable! The hardest part is the very last incline other than that easy!! I actually went around 2pm while it was hot but once we got closer to the cave, it was nice and shady!

It’s a solid hike. The passage from state trust land to Tonto National Forrest was a bit difficult to see, but beyond that it ramps up in difficulty late as everyone mentions. Bring a snack for the cave! The wave cave is cool. A little overrated in my opinion from the public perspective, but still geologically fascinating.
