I do not recommend to go counterclockwise, descend from the trail mark to Aqua Caliente is steep and very slippery. I am in a good shape and fell 2x.

Super steep, make sure to go clockwise so you don’t have to descend the steep, dirt side

HikingFeeGreat!

We did the Vault mine trail to Aqua Caliente across Josephine Saddle and returned on Super trail. Do this hike counter clockwise going up Vault Mine is 1000 ft elevation per mile. Lots of loose rock, & gravel. Coming down Vault would be brutal on the knees. Very doable with a few stops to catch your breath. We saw signs of recent Bear activity with scat, tracks & the ground was tore up. Once you get onto Agua Caliente it’s much easier and your rewarded with amazing views. So far my fav trail in madera canyon. We came down Super Trail which was a breeze but added 1.2 extra miles. So rewarding to complete.

Added a side trip to Agua Caliente Saddle. Difficult but rewarding with great views and beautiful woods.

We hiked this trail counterclockwise as recommended by a previous review. We missed the trailhead for Vault Mine Trail. The trail marker is for Aqua Caliente Saddle 1.6. It is NOT for the faint hearted. The constant incline to get you over 2000 ft higher is brutal. The views are so amazing. Take extra water especially if you end up hiking an extra 2 miles because you missed the trail.

Very nice barely and traffic. Only saw 2 people on the trail. If you have the stamina or the time to take frequent breaks I recommend doing this trail counter clockwise. You’ll get all the elevation gain out of the way in the beginning and save your knees. Keep in mind for the first 2.5 miles you gain 1K ft per mile. It’ll kick your butt but it’s smooth sailing after you get to the saddle. Also be mindful of the trail not being updated on this app. The trail forks off to the right with a sign pointing you to go up for agua caliente. Follow that. If you go straight the Vault Mine trail just ends at a bug infested abandoned mine. I made that mistake the first time around.

Really tough at the beginning with about 1000 feet of gain per mile. Can get chilly so bring a jacket and definitely bring snacks. Reminded me a lot of an east coast hike (lots of big trees and shade and very rocky).

Very steep in places. The Agua Caliente trail has great views but is narrow with steep drop offs. Saw a deer and a baby rattler. On past trips have seen an owl, a bear and a hawk.

We hiked up Old Baldy, across/up Agua Caliente, and down Vault Mine. Agua Caliente and Old Baldy were moderately difficult and fun. Definitely a "must do." Amazing views that alternate between desert vegetation and forest with elevation change. Lizards, beautiful birds, and occasional deer. Vault Mine was another story- very steep, rocky switchbacks and slippery gravel. Do not take to descend unless you have proper sticks and shoes!!!! We did not and it was very tiring on our feet and knees (and we are in decent shape). Highly recommend this hike, just consider going up Vault Mine (it'll be tough but better than the descent), to agua Caliente, and back via old baldy.

Up Vault Mine Trail down Agua Caliente Trail and down Old Baldy Trail. Acending Vault Mine Trail is a bit of a challenge but the view is worth it. Made the mistake of using running shoes.

Killer steep climb up Vault Mine Trail for a little over a mile at the start. The rest of the loop was absolutely lovely. Preferred the steep climb to steep descent this time of year with all the snow. The loop is only about 6.5 miles from the parking lot. The app trail map takes two loops around.

First to Review

I have hiked this loop a few times, and you can do it in either direction. However, hiking up the Vault Mine trail is a lesson in what a steep trail is all about. After a few times ascending the Vault, I no longer choose that option. It's bad enough coming down it. So I hike up the Old Baldy trail out of the upper parking lot to Josephine Saddle, then across from there on the Agua Caliente trail, and then down the Vault. The Old Baldy trail to the saddle is moderate, then the Agua Caliente section from the saddle to the cut off to the Vault is easy, and the Vault trail is really steep. So you get a good mix of everything on this loop. Great views along the AC section back towards Wrightson. The mileage calculated on the opening review above is not correct. It's only about 6 1/2 miles total. It took me just about 3 hours, with a short break at Josephine Saddle. Each section took me an hour, but I hike fairly fast. Check it out!!
