A very unique trail, that is only available by reservation or on an “open” day. 5 stars for the ruins, views of Roosevelt Lake, and the unique experience. Be Warned: The Park Service will close the trails due to extreme heat, or other weather. Extreme heat is pretty common there, so don’t expect to hit the trail in the afternoon if it’s summer.

What an awesome find. We stumbled upon this hike and were lucky enough to make it on Heritage Day so the Upper Cliff Dwellings were open to the public all day. Otherwise the trail is only open Sat/Sun with a reservation because a guide is required. The Park Service is trying to preserve the ruins that are over 700 years old. I was so excited to finally be able to hike among AZ’s beautiful wildflowers that are very short lived but very abundant because of the rain we have had. What an amazing and beautiful hike this was. It is just under 2.5 miles round trip with a 650 ft. Climb. Relatively easy but steep climb with switchbacks.

This is a great hike that few people get to experience. The upper dwelling of the Tonto National Monument is only available through the NPS with a ranger-guided tour. These tours are only offered from November through April, are offered only four times per week for groups of up to 15 people. The tour requires advance reservations and often fills up weeks in advance. Our guide was a brilliant and extremely knowledgeable anthropologist who provided a wealth of info about the history and culture of the Salado people. You can walk through this 32-room dwelling and see artifacts that are 700 years old. Great views of Roosevelt Lake and the Mazatzal Mountains are provided with a nearly 360-degree vista. You will love this easy half-day hike if you like beautiful AZ scenery and the study of ancient Indian ruins. 3.5 mile hike. 605 ft elevation gain.
