Beautiful.....rocky.....challenging but great hike. Lots of wildflowers right now. Not much traffic between Gateway Loop turnoff and Tom’s Thumb. Pack lots of water.

Decent trail, definitely more moderate than hard imo. Some loose rock but no scrambling, perfectly fine in trail runners or even regular running shoes. Went with some family members and averaged 29 min/mile but could def be done faster than that.

We started at 0730 - it was a bit cold but we warmed up quickly. Great hike with amazing views. On our way back down, we decided to add on the Lookout Trail which added an extra mile. There were beautiful views from that vantage point as well. Our total hike recording shows we did 12.8 miles.

This was a great hike with alot of climbing. It was in the high sixties today and would have been alot harder if it was hot. There are some areas that were quite windy particularly at the top so be prepared. If you use hiking sticks, i would definitely bring them as the downhill sections are steep and hard on the knees.

Training for rim to rim in the spring Thick soled shoes or boots make a big difference on the hooves. There are some toothy rocks coming out of the trail in parts so mind your footing. Take more water than you think you’ll need. It’s a well maintained route and lots of stewards out including a very gregarious greeter at the thumb.

Beautiful trail. Very rocky, a little hard on the soles of the feet. Took 5.5 hours round trip.

Tough out and back. My 2 mileage trackers read just over 14 miles from gateway trailhead to Tom's Thumb and back to gateway. I thought most of the trail was rocky. Great Hike!
